Im in the initial stages of planning a week of backpacking on the long trail for August. I wanted to avoid the bug season but will have the heat to contend with. The last time I was on the long trail was in 1980, I was 14 with the Boy Scouts, we did a 50 miler. So my plan is to start at the southern terminus and hikes for 7 days. My son and I go up a couple times each summer and do long weekends in the whites. This time we are going for a week. Has anyone been on the LT that can send a few tips and suggestions...thanks
August should be good. The bugs aren't as bad. Sounds like you will have enough time to get from MA to Bromley or just past. You must check out the huge sawdust pile at Grout Job that is just off the trail 100 yards south of the Stratton-Arlington road. It is from the mill that stopped operating 110 years ago. It isn't mentioned in the guide book but you can't miss it if you are looking for it. If you are there the third weekend of August I might be able to help you with logistics. I have plans for every other weekend in August.
IS, could help you more on the northern end, say Killington to Canadian border.. never been on southern Vermont side..
Good luck! I'd love to try it someday. Been in the whites a lot and the ADKs, but rarely anything over 3 days. Was planning on doing the Northville Placid Trail one of these days but I just can't plan long trips while my son is young still. Hope to make it to the ADKs a couple times this summer for maybe overnighters at least.
I've been thinking the same thing. There's gotta be a place during the week I'm up there to get a long trail ale.
I think you are probably going to need to wait till you get to RT30 and the Bromley area for that. The trail is kind of dry. You'll be about 3 miles from the nearest store in Bennington when you cross RT9 and about 7 to the store in West Wardsboro when you cross the next road. You'd be best off hitching into Bennington if you do want to make the side trip.
long trail brewery in Bridgewater base of Killington mountain east side give us a shout will discuss delivery
Wish I was getting off a little closer, most likely getting off the trail at the intersection of 103. I'm kinda guesstimating my mileage per day, hoping to get in just short of 90 in 7 days.
I was just looking at my map and trying to figure out my best bet for getting off the trail after 3 or 4 days to resupply. I might find a place to eat at the same time and get a LTA. My best guess so far will be the Wallingford area at rt 140.
~13 miles a day with a pack on your back is a pretty ambitious pace. It also depends on how the campsites line up. Assuming you start in MA, Manchester would be the place to hitch into if you want a stop after 3-4 days.
The entire trip is depending on a lot of things; weather, health and how well the walking mileage goes. I'm guessing the 0 day will be the trip into town for supplies and a decent meal. I left a full day on the back end of the trip for any "in case" situations that may arise. I plan on getting off the trail on a saturday and drive home on a Sunday but if I need to go one more day in the sticks I have the extra day. I just peeked at the map and good tip on Manchester. There's a spur trail I can take down to rt 30 and then into town. Got any suggestions in town? Food shopping and a place to eat?
We're heading to the whites tomorrow. We're going up for vacation with a hint of business, but plan on doing a good bit of hiking.
