There is no way you are going to sit on a milk crate and split vertical with a the size of rounds I usually have to split, usually at least 24 to 36 inch diameter, easier to quarter them with wedge and sledge (or noodle) and then split horizontal. Either that or you have to try to roll them over to the vertical splitter and muscle it in place, splitting vertical is just to damm uncomfortable and hurts my back anyway. Vertical may work for some but it not for me

I don't even have a vertical splitter but this idea sounds pretty good to me.
Lay a piece of plywood in front of your vertical splitter, 3 or 4 pieces of 2 foot pipe laid on the plywood, roll the rounds over to the splitter stand the round up on the pipes and position it as needed

I'm with Elderthewelder - noodle and horizontal for me.

Different strokes, I've muscled the bigguns vertically and it's just much easier using the saw to me. Then again, I'd prefer to run the saw :saw::saw::saw:

may work if I had a nice level flat splitting area, but my back yard aint exactly flat or level and is small. once that big round gets away from me it would be down in the creek ( more of a ditch actually, but city calls it a creek) and i would then have other problems

Well you don't want any big rounds rolling down the hill then do ya.
For me though I just think its better on my back to stand erect and use a sledge n wedge along with a pry bar if needed, rather than bend over noodling

On the contrary, if splitting horizontally, you still have to get the pieces up onto the splitter. Not so when splitting vertically. And for the large ones, yes, you do have to get up sometimes to get them on but there are still tricks that make things work easier. Like a couple small limbs or better yet some pipe to roll the big pieces on. Certainly not lifting and we don't have to split them by hand first either or noodle them.

I guess some backs hurt more when sitting but most backs hurt more when lifting.

makes no sense unless you really want the exercise and wear and tear on the shoulders and back - the later is not replaceable
only time the maul comes out is when I can't move a round - a big, big round
