My battery was 2 years old also , showed 12 volts but had no cranking power. 2 Years is about all you get out of these batteries now
Just checked and it showed 13 volts, took about 30 seconds to go through a charging cycle, then showed done. Still no crank. Casper and I were on a walk, so I didn't spend much time. I'll go back out in a bit.
I'm not seeing corrosion on any wiring terminals during a quick visual. I wonder if the auto place will pro-rate the battery. A new one's only about $45, but I hate just throwing parts at a problem.
If you have jumper cables, jump it. If it's the battery and nothing else, she oughta start for you at least.
Yeah, I've done that in the past. I'll give that a shot first from the Jeep. The charger has a 60 amp start feature, but I'll have to check the manual. Not intuitive.
Ahhh manuals... somebody (maybe you) said "manuals are just some other guy's opinion"... Always seem to be written by confuzitologists.
So, you have a voltmeter. That helps. A battery with no load on it can show great voltage and be shot. Turn on the headlights, engage the clutch, and then check it. But, the battery is probably good. Check the trigger wire on the solenoid for 12 volts, while activating the key switch.
fox, the charger has a voltage check feature.....which is what I used. No voltmeter. Had one, but have no idea where it is. Can't start this one if the PTO is engaged, and I pulled the light bulbs. My knee keeps hitting the key and turning it to the one position when I get off the seat, so I've killed the battery a couple time w/o even knowing it. Poor key placement. I have the seat in the rearmost position too. This I can do, when I get a meter.
All the "safety" elec stuff drives me crazy anyway. I had to disconnect the button under my seat finally. Every time I'd lean over to fart the engine would shut off... dontcha hate that? Nothing more frustrating than chasing elec probs.
If the solenoid is easy to look at check the 2 heavy wires and see if it is burnt on the solenoid where they hook up. That happen to mine. The plastic on the solenoid was burnt and cracked. Gary
You wouldn't need to be cranking it, just putting a light load on the battery to see if the battery voltage drops significantly- more than a volt or so. If the battery has a bad cell, it can show good voltage while resting and the voltage drop in half from a small load. Probably not the problem, but easy to check with a voltmeter. Or your charger, if its accurate (never saw that feature. Mine has a charged/dead needle but it lies badly).
I found a coupon code for Advance Auto for 40 percent off took in my old battery and ended up paying $37
I thought it was crazy that I could not back up while the mower was engaged that switch got disabled the first week, then the seat switch got disabled, I couldn't get off of the tractor and dump the trailer without having to restart the tractor that's stupid
We had a local boy (6 years old) that lost part of a leg a couple of weeks ago when his mother backed up with a lawn mower and ran over him with the blades running! I am one of the first ones to disable stuff like that, but it makes you think. Gary
Well, well, well. Wouldn't you know it. It usually the simple things. Hooked up the charger cables from the Jeep, and after a couple minutes it cranked and started. I should have known, because these symptoms are similar to a couple years ago when I had to replace the battery. I just had it in my head that since I was messing with the clutch, that I might have goofed something up...........turns out I'm the goof. Anyway, thanks to Stinny for that reminder, and to everyone else who offfered suggestions and anecdotes. Now, all I need to do is put on the deck and get to work. Replacing the battery is much less hassle than the alternatives.
I was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago, I didn't think it was the battery but I checked everything else out and it wouldn't even start with a hundred amp boost charger on it. Hopefully I have everything fixed on mine now, I just got through putting a new coil on it today, because it would not start when it was hot
Was just out there a few minutes ago and the key was on...........again. Battery wasn't dead, but the tractor wouldn't crank much. I'll go back after it tomorrow.
