I think that will be the route we go. As much as I like having a basement, I'm tired of water seepage wrecking things. No insurance coverage for seepage either. Plus, like I said, my wife's knees can't handle the steps due to a head on car accident years ago and rheumatoid arthritis. I'll probably dig a storm shelter in the yard that can double as vegetable storage for winter.

On a positive note, I am meeting a state forester out at the farm. They heard my tree rows are from the first year ND started soil bank/wildlife conservation programs in 1951. Guess they want to assess their condition and help plan other plantings. Should be interesting.

Amazing how the stair issue evolves as you get older and your afflicted with joint issues. I wouldn't even consider a house with stairs. Single floor living is a pleasure.

My wife took this picture today. This is not to far from my work. The traffic stopped and let us get a picture of it. I really need to source an apple tree now.

The main downside of living on a slab - no basement for shelter/storage.
Add in you can't really inspect for termite invasion on a slab, until your drywall or baseboard has been eaten to visual ingress.
with PEX piping water lines can be run overhead without "hopefully" pipes bursting someday - they may still freeze solid, but folks up north and down here still run into that anyways

Is it easier to heat too? I assume with 1 floor living area are near stove and bedrooms at end where I would want it cooler anyway..

Have 1 wood stove in each end of the house. Run the 30 alone most of the time but when it drops to the -20's or there is a strong N or NW wind, we kick the 2nd stove on and evenly heat the entire house. On a AVERAGE winter (not like the last 2) I burn 24/7 from October to April on 5-7 cords.

Sure wouldn't want a place without a basement. Too hard for me to give it up. Makes a nice place to "hunker down" during the cold blizzards winter throws our way every year. Good place for workshop and wood stove and wood storage....and a bit of an escape from someone else when it's needed!!

This year, I put the computer down in the workshop also. Also have the treadmill down here...which usually involves a lot of "suggestions" or "recommendations" when someone else is using the treadmill and I'm on the computer! "You should get rid of that...When is the last time you used this?...I bet you didn't know you had those..." Get the idea?
Almost makes me want to make the same noise your dog does!
