Oh yeah, I knew that the handgun rules are a little different. But I still find it funny that for a rifle a 38 Special is fine but those others aren't. Both a 9mm and .40 cal have more energy out of short barreled hand guns than the .38, so they should have even more energy out of the longer barrels of carbines and rifles. So why doesn't the Ohio DNR want us using them? At least your friend didn't waste money on a 10mm he can't use!
Indiana native here so I have MUCH experience with those stupid straight wall pistol cartridge rifles and the stupid rulez.....grrr. We cant use 10mm, even in a handgun because we have minimum case length of 1.16". Seems you do not. I can already see it....people wounding deer with a 1911 .45 throwing 800fps rounds at deer. Baaaaaaaaad idea in my book. Here's where it gets stupid for us...We cant use necked down cartridges in a rifle, but we CAN shoot them from a handgun. So yea, I cant use a .308 rifle, but I can use a TC encore pistol in .308! The DNR here is trying to approve .243 and up in rifles next year.... if the public doesn't go all crazy.... Wont know until next year. We can hunt anything else with them, just not deer so I bet it gets approved. Either way, I probably wont change from my marlin lever action .44mag. I don't hunt anywhere that I can get over 100yd shot so the added effective range of a "hi powered" rifle is useless.
I promise you there is a huge difference in wound characteristics at 75 yards between a 44mag and a .30-06!!!! I have had deer run forever shot at less than 100 yards that were double lunged! I hope talks rules get changed. Old outdated rules made up by people who have no idea what there making laws about need to change.
It's funny how different the rules are around the country. Even with the availability to use rifles, I'll probably stick with my 12 ga. I hunt in pretty thick woods and have never shot a deer further than 30 yards away. And I've never had a deer take a single step after being hit with a 1oz slug either. It kills me that .410 slugs are allowed though. I know a guy who let his son shoot at a MONSTER buck at 100 yards with a smooth-bore .410 slug. First shot was low, it hit the dirt like 10 yards in front of the deer. The kid somehow got the buck in the lungs with the second shot and the deer dropped after running 40 yards. It had to be 100% luck, but now they think that it's ok to try something like that again. I'd love to know how many deer are injured and never recovered during gun season. At least the use of rifles (straight walled or tapered) should increase accuracy. Of course them people will just take shots at 300 yards when they've never practiced pass 75 yards....
Very valid point. I tend to shoulder shoot them so they typically don't go far. Normally DRT. With that said, we all know crap happens in the deer woods and shots don't always go where intended. Great....now you have made me consider buying another gun. My wallet hurts this year from gun buying. The market is so soft, I cant say no to all these cheap ones!
Send a cheap one my way ;-) I still want to shoot one with my .44 but those unexpected things is what keeps me from toteing it. I keep thinking what if the extra power was the difference between me killing a big buck or wounding him. Savage makes a very affordable rifle that is really accurate out of the box. Were I too buy another deer gun I would go to somewhere like academy and buy it off the rack and not look back.
My great uncle had a rolling block .45/70. I remember hearing him talking about shooting buffalo silhouettes at something crazy, like 1200-1500 yards! Me, I'm trying to decide between a .44 mag and .357 lever action. I think either would make a great pair with a revolver for a "when all hell breaks loose" combo. I already have a .44 mag revolver, but it's pretty darn heavy and kicks like a mule, so I'm leaning towards a .357 and picking up a revolver in the same caliber. Then I figure I could save some money shooting .38's out of both as well.
I reload, on .44 you save mega bucks. Think I figured I have like $15/100. Since even lead semiwadcutters are like $30-40 a box!
^This. 44mag is the sole reason I got into reloading in the first place! You can download those 44mag to 44special levels in mag cases and then it wont kick like a mule either.
I've been researching reloading lately, though I was thinking more for .38 sp and .45 acp. I didn't know you could save that much on .44 mag! That might persuade me to shoot the Anaconda a little more, especially if I put a lighter load in there.
Yea I load them mostly with unique. Pretty dirty but not much kick. But will knock down steel or pins or paper or what not I just loaded up some .44 with 231 those ought to have a bit more punch. I load .38s but they basically cost the exact same thing to load as .44 a few pennies cheaper is about it per round Pistol powder is almost non existing right now so beware of that. And I would go ahead and get a progressive loader you will love releasing and shoot more for less. I started out with a single stage but was spending way too time on pistol cartridges so I got a lee 4 hole turret press. I love that thing!!!! Should of bought it to begin with. I still have my single stage that I use for rifle cartridges like .243, .30-06 etc.
That's actually the one I've been eyeing. Seems a lot of people start out with a single stage and then upgrade soon after.
I dont know if I made it a year with the single. Maybe I had it a year and a bit? I have 3 or 4 turrets now. I share the powder measure on them I want to get a few more powder measures!!! I can really crank out the rounds now too! I have the auto disk measure on the turret. If you load just one round you can get the lee1000 and its even faster but not so much and changing calibers is way more of a pain. I looked hard at the two. I shoot a lot to some but really not that much so loading 50 more rounds an hour was no big deal to me. If you sit a whole hour your already making like 200+ rounds!!!
X2 on the lee classic turret! Most versatile press out there imo. It can easily be used single stage just by removing the index rod which takes 5 seconds. Priming system works great also. I've got a pro 1000 that I modified to run 9 and 40 with only a turret change. I prime on the lct and the pro 1000 is great after that. The priming system on it blows and that's putting it lightly.
I gives that revolver is not a hammer block or transfer bar equipped if so an empty chamber is a waste of a round. With those gun can't go off unless trigger is pulled period.
