The hummingbirds been back for a few weeks now. We never get orioles. There is a robins nest in the bush next to our front door. I held my daughter up to look in it this morning. She said the babies have feathers now.

You should see our feed bill for the birds! Ouch.

I get a kick out of the hummers. If they run low on food, they come to a kitchen window and hover there until we see them. Fill the feeders and they are right there. We also have phoebe who made a nest right by the barn door. I let her know when I am coming and she flies over to a bush and waits for me to leave.

Only birds I don't like that we have here are the turkeys.

btw, my wife has several books on birds. Some on eastern birds, some on western birds and all sorts of stuff like that. If anyone would want some, they can have them if they pay the postage to send them.

That is a cool bird! I haven't seen any orioles, but have a bunch of bluejays at the farm. Pretty bird, but obnoxiously loud. Also starting to see baby Canadian geese.

I had a great horned owl fly out of the tree right above me and across a field the other morning while turkey hunting. It was very cool.

I was outside working in the yard the other day and heard a strange noise that I couldn't figure out, kind of a metallic tapping noise. Turns out a northern flicker was on top of my TV antenna pecking away at it. Apparently it's called drumming and that's how they try to attract a mate.

We keep them fed well all winter, and get the occasional oddball I have to look up.
Hummers are our mainstay in the summer usually 6-8 fighting each other over the feeders.
The wrens that nested in my charcoal bag have decided to try the flower box again for their second brood, they tried it last year and I think one got killed/lost in a bad t-storm and they abandoned the eggs.
They are busy building away as I type

Those are some great Oriole pics. We've tried everything to get them to come down and feed and they just seem to ignore it, and they're nest is right above the feeder.

We've enjoyed watching birds for many years and never get tired of them, except for the annoying ones. We have all the usual suspects here plus a few others like the wood thrush and american redstart. We take our seed feeders down in the spring when the redwinged blackbirds arrive along with the cowbirds. The redwings dominate the feeder and run all the other birds off.
We like to watch the social interaction between birds and the drama that ensues. Last night the oriole was chasing a blue jay all over the yard and wouldn't relent until it left. There's almost always something going on with the birds, especially in the early evening. The robin and mockingbird chase each other a lot and it seems to me that it's just a game between them, besides the mockingbird just being the azz that he is.
With the past 2 harsh winters our bluebirds have seemed to disappear. We've seen a few, but don't have a nesting pair right now. When the bluebirds are nesting close to the house, they're a lot of fun to watch and they're not always the sweet little birds that disney makes them out to be.
We have a lot of bird houses around the yard with many of them occupied. I put up about 5 bluebird houses to give the sparrows a place to nest in hopes that they don't evict the bluebirds.

A friend made this one for us.

    He also made this one.

Here's how it looks now. mockingbird lives there.

I filled my feeder with sunflower seed and hung it in the Magnolia tree. It brought in a pair of nesting Cardinals, of course the squirrels were helping themselves, Bill Bob has stopped just chasing them he stalks instead.
Came home today and the little bastages chewed the feeder into pieces:mad:
