Got some more of the walnut over at sisters place cut up. Somewhere around 2 cords so far. MS261c did most of the work today. Such a pleasure to use. Only a few more trailer loads to go, then its milling time! Loaded up a couple of the smaller saw logs and brought them home with me. I'm going to make stickers out of the small piece.
Nice work Shawn. It is amazing that we lost so many walnut and hickory trees around this area over the years but yet in some areas there are still lots. If we want any of those nuts we had to do lots of searching.
I don't have any walnut on my end, but there's a nice stand of them started at the edge of the woods on my sister's end, on account of this tree. It was a great walnut producer - my BIL had no problem finding those nuts! Here's the before pics, in case you missed them...
Shawn Curry As I said in the original pic post after the felling-that is one "brute" of a walnut-nice btu's there
Should get some nice boards for sure. Got a project in mind for it yet ? Have had serious thoughts about a 261 CM the 362 was dream saw, but the light weight of the 261 with a 20" for me might be a better way to go. 3.9 bhp should do anything I need. Not sure how I'd like the narrower kerf though. It has the .325 X .063 right ?
Yep - I was running an 18" and .325 chisel chain. The chips weren't quite as big as 3/8, but it was still cutting plenty gooder - especially when those extra bananas kick in. I think I want to make a slab coffee table from a slice one of the big crotches. There's going to be a lot of those type of pieces too - I can't wait to start milling this thing.
A 20" bar on a 261 might be a bit much. I just had mine converted to handle a 3/8 bar. I dropped down to a 16" after much thought. It's been "supertuned" by the guys at Superior Saw, and is a blast to use. I find myself using it much more often than the 362 c
I like the coffee table idea from one of the crotch pieces. Maybe something like this one? I bought this, but it sure would have been satisfying to me if I would have made it..
Narrow kerf can do great but realize the chain will not last as long. I doubt if the bar will either but so far we're on our first bar and second chain.
Maybe they can put a 20" x 3/8 x.050 on it. I'll have to check it out. What the 1 size down from the Husqvarna 562 or 555 ? 357 or 346 but I think they use .325 too. Be a bummer to have to buy a 555 or MS362 cm just to use up all my 20" 3/8 chains
You may be right for a stock saw, but my Mastermind 261 handles a 20", 0.325, .063 bar and chain with ease in hard woods. If all I had was my 261, I'd have 16" and 20" B&C's for it. That said, I usually run it with 16" B&C on my 261, since I run 20" on a 361 PH (stock) and 24"/32" on a 461 PH (Mastermind).
I say it depends on the application. Saying that a 20" 3/8 bar is "too much" for a stock 261, assumes you're going to have the bar buried a lot. But for me, the 261 is not the chainsaw I would select for a 20" round - I would want to play with the 460. For limbing purposes, I like having a 20" bar for a little extra reach. I'm actually thinking about trying my 20" 3/8 setup on the 261, cause I think it could run with the 036 all day. Got the trailer unloaded. I set the big piece on my *fire*wood rounds from that stump I caught on fire a couple weeks ago. My annual Memorial Day BBQ is next Monday, so I'm going to leave it set up like a bench. Got the other 2 pieces down to the basement:
