Today, May 17th is Syttende Mai - Norwegian Constitution Day.
Being married to a 100% Norwegian it is a big day. The other vary unique fact is that it is also my wife's birthday. You can't get much more Norwegian than that. Thus, her nickname, "the norwegian". bless her
So, happy Syttende Mai to all Norwegian FHC members.

    Thanks Minn Marty,
    I am also 100% Norwegian.
My 88 Y.O. Folks still speak some Norwegian.
Dad grew up in Minn heating with wood. Some folks used coal.
After we moved to Nebraska, Dad got a bow saw (manual) & we started cutting firewood. Uff Da!

    I'm 50% Norwegian, 50% German.

I just read this about the constitution.

Interesting stuff, and that explains why Norwegians are not fond of Swedes.

Here's a link to what goes on and what food is eaten. Looks really really good. I wish my mom would tell me more about my heritage. Norwegian wasn't taught in school by me, but German was.

Raise a glass to a Jotul stove if you have one. Great stoves.
    Enjoy the day.

I would if I had one. But only on constitution day, and Leif Erikson day. I wouldn't want to be confused as a Viking fan.

One celebrates Syttende Mai by just like any other day except for the parade in downtown Minneapolis. Lots of Lefse with butter and brown sugar is my preferred way.
I have tried Lutefisk and can't stand it. Neither can the norwegian. So, none of that in our house. However, I have had it the Swedish way, with cream sauce and it is palatable.
So, to all my non-norwegian brethren, if you get a chance to have lefse, it is quite nice and tasty. Regarding lutefisk, I think many of the Norwegians eat it to honor there ancestors that ate it so they didn't starve to death. They preserved the fish they caught and ate it in the dead of winter so they wouldn't die.

Eating lutefisk is only slightly better than dying.

    My folks love lutefisk!
Smells as bad as it tastes. But the texture is truly repulsive.
You have this quivering striated gelatinous fish that's been dried then soaked in
LYE before you eat it. What's not to like?
    :heidi:
Lefse with butter & brown sugar.. Yum
