Guns in school? I remember when the teachers used to come out to the farm to hunt pheasants with us. And most of us found it easy to drive a car because we had driven tractors for so many years.
And swimming in the stock pond after we checked on the cows on a hot day. Feeling bullheads come up and bump against your legs under the water and ignore that chunk of "something" floating in there.
My buddy and his brother played that game and my buddy lost............an eye to be exact. So every bodies moms were right.
There was an alley 2 houses down from us. It had a 8-10% grade and it wasn't plowed in the winter. That was the neighborhood sledding hill. When you got to the bottom you were at the cross street which had a small sharp rise where the 2 met. Made a great ramp to send you airborne. It still behooves me how no one hit, or was hit by a car when we made that little jump onto and across Cherry St. Later on in life ( late teens-early 20's in the late 70's) a small group of us would run the downtown "Circuit". It's called cruising now and most towns have an ordinance against it. One night there was 7-8 of us sitting in a parking lot watching all the muscle cars going round and having the occasional 1-block race. We had a case of Miller Pony bottles in a cooler in the trunk. A cop pulled into the parking lot around midnight and just started talking to us. After a few pleasantries he asked if we were drinking. We didn't lie to him. "Yes officer. We have some beer in the trunk." "Mind if I have a look?" "No sir." We open the trunk. "Do me a favor" "What's that officer?" "Dump 'em out for me" "Yes sir" Dumping 20 or so 7oz bottles in the parking lot. "Thanks guys. Now if you would do me one more favor......Go home. "Yes sir." A case of beer doesn't go very far with 7-8 people working on it so we were nowhere near drunk. But you could never get away with that today.
On the cruising topic, we lived in a small town that had a "square" in the center of town. One of the guys had been given a 52 chevy sedan with a 6 cylinder and a"three on the tree". We got the bright idea one night to take the hood off of it. One lad sat up on the fire wall while a number of circuits around the square took place. While this was occurring, the lad on the firewall was periodically pouring a occasional dose of MARVEL MYSTERY OIL down the throat of the carb. This created the most awesome cloud that had record hang time in the town square. By the time the cops arrived on the scene, we were parked, sitting on the park benches enjoying the ensuing "investigation" on who set what on fire.......................It was hilarious to say the least.
Three teenage boys climbing a 450 foot high voltage tower with rocks in our pockets to drop down - they sunk about 8" into the ground. Never occured to us not to pee off of the tower which had no safety railing around the top platform. Got caught the night we brought railroad flares up there, lit and tossed 'em after sunset. The tower was right in the middle of the city "Gee, do you think anybody saw that?"
When I was young, we were one of the poor families that still had not put one indoors. Always expected someone to tip ours over but they never did. However, that did not deter us....
Cruisin one night with my buddy in his mustang. Carload of girls pull up and brains went out. They yell squeal em...light turns green and we lit them up. Next light same thing. Just wished we thought to look in the mirror before this point because the cop that was right behind us had no sense of humor about the situation both times.
1967 in Salina Kansas supposedly attending University. Had my tricked out 65 GTO with me. Only way I could afford to keep it on the road was by street racing the locals for $$$$$$. Blew a 396 Chevelle off the road in a race on the outside of town. Collected my money and then proceeded to a gas station to refuel. Pulling right in behind me was the local sheriff who advised me to pull over to the side once I was done @ the pumps. It ended up like the episode of Seinfeld the time Kramer got into it with the proctologist. In this case the high Sheriff was the Doctor and I was the patient after he got finished with me.............
Only one of many stories (memories)....a close buddy would play organ for daily Mass and me and another would usually accompany him during those times. This allowed us complete and unsupervised access to the bell towers! hhhmmmm, you know, if we pack a bunch of snowballs into a bucket, and bring them up to the tower, and open the window slightly, and drop the snowballs down onto the passing cars, they would never know what direction they were hit from! What a surprise we had when two of the cities finest uniforms climbed upstairs and confronted us!!
