HOW VERY TRUE! My mum used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. Coli Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake or at the beach instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then. We all took PE ..... And risked permanent injury with a pair of Dunlop sandshoes instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now. We got the cane for doing something wrong at school, they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules and to honour & respect those older than us. We had 50 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do maths and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter......., FUNNY THAT!! We all said prayers in school irrespective of our religion, sang the national anthem and no one got upset. Staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention we wish we hadn't got. I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself. I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. We weren't!! Oh yeah .... And where was the antibiotics and sterilisation kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed! We played "King of the Hill" on piles of gravel left on vacant building sites and when we got hurt, mum pulled out the 2/6p bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mum calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that? We never needed to get into group therapy and/or anger management classes. We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive? LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA. AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T, SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING! Pass this to someone and remember that life's most simple pleasures are very often the best.
Kids bumper skiing on the back of the school bus on snowy days. No one died. This should be a good thread.
When the statement "Wait till your father gets home young man........." had some real repurcussions to it............
Yep. If I had known about all these potential life threatening perils when I was younger, I'd be living in a bubble. I have no idea how I survived. My one pride and joy was a Sears transistor radio when I was about 12, with a single earbud. No stereo. And the bb guns we all got one Christmas that got confiscated when mom found out we were shooting at each other. Jeez, it was just bb guns, not shotguns.
Riding on a hood off of a 50 chevy truck flipped over and pulled behind the pickup out on the lake for winter fun.
Hitting cars with snowballs, having a fake ID to buy beer, being outside with the neighborhood kids til dark and having your mom yell your name to get you to come in. A Star Wars metal lunch box, walking to school if you lived less than 2 miles from it, rotary phones with long cords, gas was .75c/ gal and smokes was about .65c/pack.
The standard punishment in school for boys who misbehaved (for anything) was 3 hard licks on the a** with a paddle, and I don't mean a pingpong paddle. Then you got some more from the old man when you got home, because he already knew what happened in school!
same here, Smoking, my dad was a rurul school superintendent and kept the 46 surplus army jeep and the 46 Chevy pickup in our driveway. My brother and I both learned how not to grind gears on those. Couldn't tear those autos up, and we tried.
I had a campout on my parent's farm with 7 or so buddies the summer we left our small Catholic grade school and were about to split up into different high schools. One kid brought a big duffel bag, but there wasn't any clothes in it. He filled it with Playboys from the 70's he found in the garage, gun powder and primers he stole from his dad, fireworks, and cigarettes. I smoked my first and only cigarette. Lost my eyebrows to the gunpowder. We launched bottle rockets in front of cars that drove down our country road late that night, and then hid in the cornfield when the cops were eventually called. Then we fished in the river until we passed out, woke up and cooked catfish and eggs for breakfast. At some point during the night I had driven Dad's 8N tractor right through the middle of the bean field, and it left 2 rows where the tires had killed the beans. That's the only thing we got caught doing that night, and I was grounded for half the summer for it. It's been 18 years, but most of those guys are still my closest friends. I have a pic from my wedding last August with all of them except one. If you can guess, it was the one that brought the duffel bag. I hear he's moved away, has been in and out of jail, and has even lost touch with his family. But the rest of us turned out ok.
See, that was the problem.......my oldest brother got hit in the eye, so.................. I guess too far away to do any real damage, but we lost the guns anyway. Mom was a spoil-sport.
Good thing I had glasses....about 11 years old and my cousin shot at a bird with the bb gun. He missed and I hear tick off a tree ting off the shed whack off the tractor we were hiding behind and then twack off the lens of my glasses. Guess mom was right. You'll shoot your eye out. How did we ever make it?
