My buddy dropped of his splitter today for me so it was time to get some wood split and stacked from the last couple of scrounges. Some storms moved in so I didn't get as much split today as I would have hoped, but tomorrow is another day and he said to keep it as long as I need it. Good thing too.. This Hackberry isn't splitting by hand!!

Boy, that is some nasty stuff. Would not want to be splitting that by hand.

One little hint for the future. If you place the splitter beside the pile so the wood is on your left it will be easier and quicker. You reach beside you for the wood rather than behind you. In addition, you need something to sit on. Why work any harder than necessary?! ;)

Looks like you're gonna get a nice stack of good splits & get a few uglies too.

Bet you are real glad to have hydraulics for that stuff. !

That's the first time I've ever used a splitter so I'll try some different positions today. Gonna finish the little bit in that stack I didn't get done, then I'll start pulling the rounds off my trailer.

Yep Hackberry can be a bit stringy...But good shoulder season wood that dries pretty rapidly just keep it sheltered once fall hits. If its in the sun and wind it possibly could be ready to go by this season. Nice set up and have fun!

It's a mess to split. It's 16/17 shoulder and mix wood so it should be good to go. I have that and some Norway maple to split which should pretty much complete that section of stacks so I can get a tarp over it.

So how do you like using the splitter for the first time on that Hackberry?

Love it. The locust was pretty easy by hand but was a lot easier with the splitter.. I'd buy one but my buddy said to just use his rather than spending the money..

Got it all done today except the last of the locust because it started raining again. The Hackberry and locust will be a little over a cord when it's all done. The maple I snagged is junk. Some of the barkless dead stuff was solid but anything that had bark was punk junk. I'm gonna deliver the rest of it to the guy that loaned me the splitter and he'll toss it in his owb.

I know I have some oak, ash, and solid maple coming my way in the next month or two so I'm gonna be starting 3 year wood! That stack of locust is the beginning of 17/18.. 1431896429740.jpg 1431896497981.jpg 1431896557950.jpg

Have this locust left to split and the trailer load of junk I'm getting rid of next monday. All of the light color in the last pic is punk. Almost all of the remaining load is like that. Need to get the trailer cleaned off so it's ready to go! 1431896749185.jpg 1431896786544.jpg 1431896833719.jpg

Great looking stacks! I wish my yard looked that green! :binoculars:

Maple can go bad pretty fast when it's on the ground, or if the top gets damaged and the wound collects water. You might find some of it is still salvageable, but giving it away will certainly be easier. :handshake:

    Nice work!

My buddy and I have been really good friends since we met. That was like 33 years ago, and we are only just 40.
