Went to my daughter's soccer game this morning. Raining but a home game so it wasn't too bad. We won, 2-1 on a last second goal. When we got home I found that somebody used my yard as a dump and found this: Now I'm trying to decide if I should call the police & complain or figure out which tree service dumped it and thank them. Anybody know what it is? Split a round to see fresh heart wood and pulp... They are big rounds but it split pretty easy so I'll probably not complain too much. KaptJaq
I would assume that they intended you a favor, seeing that you obviously use firewood, and were not home to ask. Greg
Most of the landscapers around here know I'll take a load of clean wood. I was just surprised that it showed up on a Saturday morning. I just like when they catch me home so I can tip the crew... The post was slightly tongue in cheek... Any idea what kind of wood it is? KaptJaq
I can identify about 3 types of wood - pine, douglas fir, and western larch. It is not any of them. Greg
How is the weight & hardness? Bark looks a little like Butternut,wood does also.Related to Black Walnut,put a dark stain on it & except for the weight/softness the grain pattern/pore size is identical. Butternut is much softer,very similar to Eastern White Pine in density.
I thought it would be dogs or cats taking a dump in your yard, nice score, even if they did not get tipped. Probably saved them a landfill fee?
I was thinking black walnut but it did not seen right. It is a little lighter than the red oak I am used to so it may just be butternut. KaptJaq

Kinda looks like Catalpa, does it have a smell to it? Catalpa has an odor when split, I think it smells kinda sweet.
Butternut is my guess too similar to walnut but not as dark, & has a little white sap wood. Looks to be splitting well, & It's Free BTUs
