I just posted the beech thread but this is different entirely-I indicated I was gonna split some more of the Asplundh gift and on the very first piece, this happened! I've never heard of it, and guess it could have been dangerous-it blew the filter off the hydraulics-Is this common? It ripped the threads out-Honda power? image.jpg image.jpg

This was the culprit-The splitter was purchased new this spring-it has never failed to split anything I've put in it-I know blowing hoses is not that uncommon but blowing the filter clean off-fluid was spewing straight out like a fountain:hair:

I'm gonna guess a defective casting and/or a radically over-tightened filter. Ashwatcher , do you see the spot (at 5 o'clock facing the filter bracket)? There is no metal there under the thread. The casting may have been thin or the threads put on lopsided. Made it weak. Oil may have been bypassing the filter via a crack there for a while. Finally got weak enough to blow.
At least it is an easy fix...

Looks like some pretty cool grain in that one piece though! Sorry about your splitter... If they give you a loaner, make sure to split the rest of it with that!

Great idea Shawn Curry -that tree was planted by my grandfather in 1956, hated to see it go but Asplundh had killed it over the years "trimming" the power line right of way so having it heat my home would have pleased my paw paw---but its a biotch...I dread the splitting, and most of it is left to do image.jpg

Glad that thing didn't ping you in the ash, Ashwatcher !
That's a bummer, but it sounds like you've got a plan, despite the road time/ wrench time setback....
Paw Paw was just testing your mettle! I applaud your effort to keep on an even keel with this situation:handshake::sir:!

Hey my friend Eric VW its crap, its gonna happen...nothing to do but get it fixed-I am a lil upset with the cheap casting, gonna let the owner know and like Shawn Curry said, I'm gonna ask for a loaner...Its a large full scale Stihl and Cub Cadet dealer, privately owned not big box, but I doubt they will have that assembly in stock---If I get a loaner, I'll work it like a borrowed mule on that nasty maple:dex:

One heads up, not sure if you ever changed the filter since it is relatively new, but your will be changing it now. Be sure you get the right number of micron filter, I mistakenly purchased a "log splitter filter from tractor supply one time, and it was the incorrect micron number, splitter would build back pressure and blow the filter off under stress. Ordered correct one from parts tree.com and it has never happened since. Maybe will never be something you worry about, but thought i'd mention it.

I agree prell 73 - the 2-stage pump revved, pushed through the maple but the pressure from the Honda driven engine stressed the weakest point- KaptJaq pointed it out-look at the thinness at 5 o'clock in the pic-#1-just junk cheap metal casting-prob some magnesium in there...disappointed in Cub Cadet b ut its under warranty though---and my shop is owned by a good guy-they will make it right-Thanks Greg , I will make sure it is the right one

    Yeah, bad casting is right.

Is there any stamping indicating where it was made? I've got a guess, due to that porosity. That and cub cadet is owned by Briggs and Stratton. I know they get a lot of parts from " cost advantageous countries".

I applied for a buyer position there, had an interview or 2.

That was before I ended up where I did. When you work at a place that doesn't value you enough to pay you what you are worth, and has no chance for advancement, you aggressively pursue all options to GTFO.

It was cool working for a German company that makes high speed bottling equipment that does 70% of the worlds beverages ( beer, liquor, you name it, ), but after a while you need to take care of number one.

    Bummer.

Location of the filter could be a bit better or at least protected, IMO.
Out there just looking to get kicked, banged or smacked.

To make you hate b&s more, they killed Tecumseh, and neutered simplicity and cub cadet too. B&s is the conglomeration from hell. They own a lit of what you wouldn't think they do.

I'm just happy Ariens and Kohler have been able to keep away, despite being here in southern Wisconsin, along with Briggs.
