Anyone want to take a stab at this one? These are the new spring leaves just growing, but they don't get much bigger. It gets white fuzzy buds that look like a bit like cotton on it. Is it "cotton wood"... ? It grows super fast, if I cut a branch off, it grows sprouts out the sides of the cut and encds up twice as big in a year or two.... grows like a weed.
Cottonwood is a poplar and has a "heart shaped" leaf. I had to pull out the book. The closest thing I could find is Black gum. Do the leaves become darker green as they mature? Red in the fall?
Here's a pic of some buds that already had all the white stuff fall off. It's from afar, but I think you can see it...
Think I have them here, when the bloom dies & fall it makes a mess. I've cut & burned most of them . I know it a diamond willow.
Yea when dry it burns up fast & leaves lots of ash. By burning, I meant in a brush pile. Junk wood, worse than cottonwood. IMO
I have some small ones here just blooming that look really really close, IMO, it sure look like willow, & not the ornamental weeping one.
Maybe these better pics will help? Would love to know what these are ... they grow very fast, if I cut a branch, it grows 10 new branches around the cut branch. Anyone have a definitive tree ID ?
The cottony seeds say cottonwood/poplar - but I wasn't aware of any that lack the 'heart-shaped' leaf, until now. Looks like that might be Balsam Poplar. Aspen poplar has the heart shaped leaf.
