Most 2 cycle oils have a stabilizer . Synthetics are the way to go IMO. I buy the quarts & use a syringe to measure (lots cheaper) I mix 3-oz per gallon, most of us like a little richer mix than 50:1 During cutting season, I mix 2 one gallon jugs , & refill as needed, stays pretty fresh that way. I use Amsoil Saber, it has a fuel stabilizer, mixed 42:1
Oil wise I use Stihl synthetic. Silver bottle. I always use stabil on anything small engine. Sometimes seafoam. I restore old garden tractors and the seafoam really helps on something that has sat for years.
From my experiences with Stihl ultra, it builds up carbon pretty bad. Ive seen it in my equipment and my customers equipment as well as scoring with equipment ran at 50to1. Stihls 4 mix motors are terrible about building carbon under the valves and Stihl recommends their Stihl decarbonizer which is EDTA acid. Id use Lucas oil before Ultra and its a better oil imo and much cheaper. Stihl Ultra is also only FB rated oil
I see oil threads on bike forums all the time but just use manufacturer recommended oil grade on my bike. Now I am seeing the oil fanboys here and think I will do the same. I will use the grade of oil that my manufacturer recommends and not worry about brands. For me that means FD rated oils.
For years and years this is all I used to use @ 32:1 ................ those same motors are still running today ..................... it was THE best oil in its heyday !
Be nice to hear from some saw mechanics on oils , mixtures & any wear they've noticed. The EPa is the reason for 50:1, 40:1 mix will not be any noticeable performance difference & you'll have less internal metal wear, & longer life on the saw IMO. Any 2 cycle oil is better than using 30 weight motor oil, like many of us did back in the day . Less smoke for sure
40:1 would be the least oil I would use. I use 32:1 normally with a good synthetic like klotz, maxima, or motul.
My 550 doesn't like 32:1 in anything. It runs better on 40:1. I don't like the different mixes around but it's not used by me much any way. Mixed up a half gallon with VP gas and K2 for my dad the other day.
+1 Saw book & epa says 50:1 I use 3 oz per gallon, easy to measure. (128/3 = 42.6 ) 3 oz per gallon is 42.5 :1 saw seems to not notice a little more oil, especially using the synthetics.
Do some timed cuts with an oil like 800t, h1r, r50 that r higher viscosity @ 32:1 and then 42:1. Thats just my opinion on the higher viscosity oils but oils like r2, lucas, K2, Stihl Ultra which are thinner oils will do well at 32to1
Me either... Or in anything else. And I have a 460 (running 32:1) that took a stock 661 in Iowa and tied with a ported 661. An ounce of oil in a gallon of gas won't slow down a piston. I don't care what oil you use. I'm a fan of more oil.
Try running 32to1 in a saw then run straight gas until it burns up of course and see which is faster. Oil is working against the combustion process
The most power will be made with 1lb of fuel mixed with 14.6 lb of air but of course a 2 stroke will burn up without oil mixed in. Once u add the oil guess what happens? Performance goes down.
