Shawn Curry That tree gonna heat the hood for a while-my only problem with walnut is the ash it produces, tons of it...good heat though-nice job!!!
That's very hot weather to be running a 1 man operation. Plus you have to watch out for copperheads?? Take it easy. That's hard enough work not contesting with heat or poisonous critters.
Definitely not butternut nor pignut but for the life of me I can't come up with what it is. I should know but sometimes I don't know squat. On the other hand, you need a new tow strap!!!! But you should be able to shorten it and make it work a bit longer.
The compound leaf, combined with the drooping male catkins, I think definitely place it in the Juglandaceae family, which includes all types of hickory and walnut. So it's one of those. The heartwood is much too dark to be butternut, and I can't rule out hickory, because I haven't seen enough. It sure looks identical to the black walnut I was cutting this weekend though.
Shawn Curry Thx sir, I trust your judgement and I'll get good pics of it when I cut it-we agree its a burner so eventually I'll get pics of it up-I dropped it because it was in the path of the 2 beech trees across the ravine
Yeah, I was going to mention that due to the leaves as they are, that it had to be a relative of the walnut family. It'll burn, and that's all that matters.
