Decided to start splitting today from my last 2 scrounges. Figured I'd slide a block near my trailer and bust them there.. About 10 minutes in a split flew and shattered my tail and marker light.. I'll bet nobody could have possibly seen that coming..lol.. Oh well. More pics of the progress later. 1431178017558.jpg 1431178157779.jpg

I've only had a handful of splits "pop".
TSC has replacements fairly cheap, but that sucketh.

It is pretty predictable that some splits will go flying. It is why nobody is allowed anywhere close when I am splitting. Perfect aim to take out a tail light looks like Murphy at work to me.

At least it was the side lens. It's cheaper than the back main lens if that's any consolation.

Trailer light lenses and me don't get along. I'm going to start making lens guards for my utility trailers.

Flying splits are not that uncommon with any axe; therefore predictable. If you want to see splits fly try one of those funny Finnish axes (the Leveraxe). They send the pieces out like a rocket sometimes. Or watch a video of the Chopper Axe; it sends them flying with force every time.

The only busted tail light I received was my 7 yr old throwing splits on the trailer for delivery. Should have seen the look on his face. He thought he was getting his tale busted for sure. I considered it a teaching moment instead of a discipline moment. He was happy with that.

They'll fly farther being up on a stump too. I have to use one, because my ground is so soft, but you could probably get away with splitting them right on the ground there.

At least you didn't get the saw!

I've had a few fly off with an axe before and a couple caught me in the shins but I split far enough away from where me and my girlfriend park that I don't have to worry about damaging the vehicles. Good shot there though.:p

    Bummer

I go thru 1 or 2 tail lights per year on the wood hauler.
Turning around in the wood cutting area or backing into something.
I figure it to be part of the annual wood cutting costs now LOL
I've even used a red marker to color the light bulb

Some red duct tape (or clear tape & red marker ) till you can get a new one.

    PS: buy 2 spares, a R & L

I don't have the splitter yet and this Hackberry/Maple combo laughs at the Fiskars so I'm making a new high btu stacking area. It's for the black locust and some oak that I have and more oak I know of I have coming within a few weeks. Gonna have a single pallet row 32 feet long here by time I'm done. Using the rocks to level the slope a little and keep the weeds down. I stack a little over 5 feet so every 3 skids will be a cord. I also cut up a bunch of the dead branches and stacked those on top of next year's silver maple. 1431199558788.jpg 1431199587116.jpg 1431199188074.jpg 1431199382331.jpg

On a random side note. I've never seen maple helicopters this bad. I don't think these trees did this last spring. I know the big one in the middle is a silver and I think the other 2 are ornamental. What a mess.. I suppose if nothing else it's great for my gutters.. :thumbs::rofl:  1431207100142.jpg 1431207148404.jpg 1431207193095.jpg

After smashing mine about ten times, i got a cheap portable pair and put them on a board that i bungee down on the back of the trailer. Once I'm home they just unhook and come off.

Go out and pretend you're a kid again and see how those things fly.
We used to do that when I was a kid.....throw 'em up in the air and watch 'em whirly down.:dancer:

And being a farm kid, we used corn cobs with chicken feathers in one end. They would go much farther.
