Its a bit early, better next week, but it looks like an early bur oak leaf. Pin oak is in the red oak family and has pointy leaves.
Easy way to tell species.....red pointy leaves....white rounded.......but chestnut an pin dont look like oak leaves...if that makes sense
Another that you would swear is not oak is shingle oak. It is in the red oak family but the leaf looks like it belongs on a fruit tree.
Definitely white... I have a couple swamp-bur oak that I planted last year, and the leaves look just like that. Judging from pics I've seen of mature bark, I'd guess that's what you have too.
White oak leaf but the bark is different than the white oak I'm familiar with in PA & WV Is becoming a stack of splits in it's near future ? ?
It still looks like Q macrocarpa to me. It is in the white family but is not Q alba. Lots of pictures here to help identify it. https://www.extension.iastate.edu/forestry/iowa_trees/trees/bur_oak.html
This is a Bur Oak on my place. About 16"DBH. Too early for acorns, and they don't last long when they hit the ground. Wildlife love them. They taste pretty good to me too, a little better than White Oak acorns.
I'd say bur oak to the OP pictures. I've never split a big one like that but heard they make you work for it. Pretty close to the top of the firewood heap unless you have hedge or ironwood around.
No I don't think it will be coming down for a while. Just curious what I have. It actually sits on the city side of the alley though so they may decide for me.
