The winch was added about 20 years ago and at that time there were no light weight hydraulic units ,so AC was the best way to go. For cable a good quality 3/16"is used instead of 1/4", so for the same length of cable you get much better pulling power out of the winch. Should say DC not AC !!!

Is there some place on the internet I can buy a decent one? All the ones I find on e-bay are about rusted to death unless you guys are searching something other than the words log dog.

when I seen log dogs I thought, pictures of our dogs that love to steal splits off the piles. I find splits all over the yard.
I think these could be helpful for removing good wood from the dump, instead of trying to rip it out of a tangle of willow or some sort of ever green.
These rounds are about 36"dia and 22" long. The dog is set with the 3 lb soft hammer that is sitting on the half round. Onto the table. The splitter is not a power house by today's standards, so I leave the dog set and just spin the round. I just line up the last split with the dog and it's out.

These splits are for Granny's new furnace and they just the right size for her to handle. I'm not that familiar with this style of wood burning furnace, but for the small heating load that it is providing, about 8 splits this size are good for 24 hours .
