Went to buddy's to cut downed oak. He said neighbor had downed hickory that need to go now. I said no brainer get the hickory. Prob the hardest wood I ever cut. But free hickory. Sweet. Finished off the load with the oak.
Nice load Mark. I've cut a bunch shagbark hickory , I like the wood but not the bark that can fly around when cutting.
Good score markr. In 20 years of burning, we never had hickory but I keep hearing how great it burns. Maybe someday....
Nice load there....this was the first winter I burnt a fair amount of hickory, pretty fine stuff. Over 30 years burning but just never got into too much hickory but I have a good amount in the piles now. Pignut mostly last year but I now have a good bit of shagbark too.
What kind of oak ? Hickory looks like pignut, if that's it with the bark on , in the trailer. Between the PU & trailer, think there's a full cord ? Prime BTUs ! Awesome score !
One reason why my combo helmet stays on while bucking shagbark, with the mesh visor down- the bark chips don't taste so great. Same thing applies to black cherry. Just wish the cherry burned like shagbark.
You mean the thick bark pieces that blocks chains from spinning? I hate that stuff, but the wood sure burns great!
I've never burned Osage orange, so I can't comment on that, except the btu charts have hedge as top btu wise, but shag is my favorite too. I'm a shag whore. I admit it.
I have never knowly burned it, but it is the single hardest wood I have ever cut and the heaviest. Flattened out the helpers on the dually.
