As a length measuring device, that looks like a terrible idea. The indicated length would change dramatically with subtle changes in the saw's orientation.

Or the shape of the log too. And it better be a high powered laser if you're going to point at a distant object. But it looks so cool. :dex:

Every time you use it, you have to announce: "I am Locutus, of Saw!"

The Germans are a little more stuck with the quality of theirs products see cars , tools , and many others , so if this thing is a factory produce and not a home made, be 100% sure that have been tested thousand times and in conditions that you and me can not even imagine.
for example the saws test in a vibration machine for about one week 24 hour a day non stop, and then in the freezer in - 40 c for the same time.
I think that noone of us put his saw in - 40 and then pull the starting rope .

I'm not as young as I used to be, so I call it quits at -10°F / -23°F. Incidentally, my MS170 won't start on Motomix at +11°F / -11°C. It will start on pump gas with Stihl Premium 50:1 at -10°F.

I use a small stick the length I want and a "wood crayon" from my local home improvement store at around a buck each. The crayon will last well over a year unless I get crazy about cutting huge numbers of cords of wood. Before I buck a log I walk along it with pre-measured stick in left hand and crayon in right hand. In almost no time I have marked all of my cuts and bucking is guided by those simple crayon marks. If I really need more precision I guess I could use some kind of magnetic level to keep my saw perfectly vertical but who needs that kind of precision for firewood?

It will start and run at 40°F / 5°C and above on Motomix just fine. That should be -10°F / -23°C in my first post.

I dont know where the "locutus of saw thing is from" but like Pantelis this presicision is just crazy. I know too long for the stove is a pain but who really cares if one is 14.5"s long and the others are 16.25"s long and so forth?
