Bottom picture, the round on the far left looks like ash but then some of the others make me question that.

For some reason, I think it's in the Hickory family. Seeing those spots, especially 2nd in from the left, makes me feel this way...

You know Locust Post , I felt the same thing-and here I am the Ashwatcher---the wood just looked a little too dark to me to call it ash-I really dont know-I was really thinking chestnut oak?

The bigger it gets, the rougher the bark. I think its all hickory.

Don't forget to agree with fox9988, too... Ashwatcher!
I've seen that cross section pattern and bark appearance near the tops of big Shag bark, but also in smaller, juvenile trees, as well.
Hey, we covered "tagging" last nite, it was fun; are you ready to step up to using the "like" feature now?

The bark on the trunk of a big hickory is harder for me to ID (except Shagbark). I have to glance up the tree to look at the bark on the limbs about this size.

The only hickory we have here is shagbark, but this does have the look of a hickory to me too.

Thanks-Im convinced its hickory-a friend came by and asked, said his dad had plenty and that I would be welcome to it if interested-they just dropped like 60 trees around their 2 houses---has some beech and white oak too-guess I'll trade one day of cutting this weekend to go haul from there-and they thanked me for helping them to clean up??? Good people around here, good people all on here-I am blessed and appreciative for sure

It's pignut. The bark should feel really hard. You can pretty much identify a hickory tree blindfolded by the feel of the bark alone.

Pignut and mockernut are very similar, pignut having better defined ridges in the bark, giving it more of an ash type of look.

Elms took me a while too. They are super easy to identify whe growing out in the open just by their shape so I never learned to id them up close. When I came across some in the woods I couldn't figure it out. It drove me nuts till I found a sapling that I could get leaves from.

I think you may have some cottonwood in your state but they would no doubt be down low and by creeks and rivers.
