Runs great, once I get it going, but the problem is it will not start cold.It rolls over and never tries to start even at full choke, but you can remove the breather and pour a trickle of gas in it and it fires up imediatley and runs great. If you restart in a timely manner it will restart, but if you wait a while it has to be primed again to restart. What's the problem ?
Possibly a fuel pump issue but my first check would be valve adjustment. With a little more info about the engine I'm sure I have the service manual for it if you need it.
Pump runs on crankcase pulse like 2 stroke carb. It may be getting weak or if it's remote mount check vacuum line that connects to it.

Thanks man that's awesome that will help a lot. I haven't worked on these types of motors hardly at all, I did put a head gasket on this engine, but when I did I could not find any torque values anywhere. Anyway, is the valve clearance adjustable on these or what?
Valve adjustment info starts on page 80 of the manual. Start reading at page 70 for other things to check if you have to go into the engine. My first reply I was assuming it was a vanguard engine with overhead valves. This one is different so I'd recommend you rule out everything else before going after the valves.
Here is an Internet picture. The black rectangle is the fuel pump. This one is attached to the carb but some are remote mount. Google Briggs fuel pump images and you'll see.
Thanks for the replies guys. And the manual Went out today to see if I could get the tractor fixed up, then wouldn't you know, it turned over real slow, put on a hundred amp booster charger, still the same thing, cleaned every Electrical connection I could find, still the same thing,, tested the starter it was ok, I didn't think it was the battery but it was, got a new one. The carburetor was a three screw pump on board, but what I found was the joke was not closing all the way, front fuel line was kind of cracked, replaced the line, put in a new fuel filter, fixed the choke, new air filter, now it is starting up like it should and running good runs as good as the day I bought it in 94, does everything I needed to do,, not bad for a 20 year old MTD
Put the hood back on, Been driving it around a couple years with no hood , put the hub caps back on too, looks better now , it could use a wash job 6 high speeds , and 6 low speeds it will haul some wood too
