Since turkey season opened April 4th. Just took my 4th bird this morning, so I let my brother know that we can resume the firewood hoarding as soon as it dries up some. Turkey season is over, for me, as the limit is 4 bearded turkeys. I have identified several dead standing oak trees while hunting the past few weeks. Although I have deer hunted since I was 15 years old, this is my 1st year turkey hunting. Pics below. Number 1 (19# 14 oz. 11 1/4" beard) Number 2 (jake 4" beard, 15# 10 oz.) Number 3 (bearded hen, 6" beard, 10# 1oz) Number 4 (10" beard, 15# 12 oz.) Ready to cut, split, and stack, again.
Nice work! It's been pretty muddy around here and I've done nearly zero wood work lately, myself. There's quite a few gobblers here, and I've never hunted them yet. I even already have a gun that will work for them. Browning gold hunter 3.5" 12 gauge, 24" barrel. It is a bit shiny though.
That's another way we can have fun in the woods. Nice score (s) :yes) Gonna be pretty warm to be cutting firewood pretty soon, eh?
Great job Cribbed Ends! My season begins May 4. Never taken a bird yet. Hoping that my son can get his first bird this year. We tried last year, with no success. Looking forward to trying again.
Sweet and congrats! Season opens here tomorrow...but due to work I doubt I'll be able to get until near the weekend
Thanks guys! I suspected it earlier, but I now know that I have the firewood hoarding disease. When you have toms gobbling, and hens yelping, and your mind wanders to that tree over there, which will make excellent firewood, your are in Stage IV of the disease process. Only pallitive treatments are in order. Cut, split, and stack more wood. This has been an interesting 1st year.
Also worried about the "pretty warm" thing. We worked on firewood all summer last year. This year we can relax a bit, and sweat less. My brother and I are at least 3 years ahead after the push last year. Some of it could season more, but it did great this past winter. Next winter should be fine, but 2 years out should be excellent.
You are not alone. I have been infected also. Cut, split, and stacked a windblown cherry Saturday to get my fix. Got my eye on another one for this weekend.
About twenty five years ago we were wandering around SC, Georgia, area and a campground owner invited me on a turkey hunt. Whatever state we were in allowed rifles (he had a scoped 30-30 that had been made in Lakefield, just down the road from here) and back then I carried my 1911 on cross border trips, which was also legal for birds. At that time we did not have wild turkeys around here but I had done a lot of handgun hunting/shooting so had CONFIDENCE.....To bad we couldn't find any birds. Now we no longer allow handgun hunting up here, are not allowed to take handguns while on random trips south across the border and have to take a special course before we use a shotgun on our own turkey pests.....
I got this guy last week, during Wisconsin's opening week of turkey season. I confess that I spent a lot of time looking at dead trees in the woods and contemplating which way to fell them and how to access them with a tractor.
Scary. We're not too far behind ya down here. Eventually guns will be outlawed in the U.S. and ordinary folk will be considered felons just for having them. Sad, but true.
I hope so too, Backwoods. I just don't like the direction this country is headed in. It seems people have forgotten how and why the U.S. was founded. People care nothing of freedom anymore. They want to be told what to do by their government, who is more than happy to grant them their wish.
You want some turkey, just sit on my steps and use a slingshot. My dog trees them in the side yard all the time. Not unusual to have thirty walk up the cliff from the lake in the early morning. Knowing the ticks that are in the woods, I think they must be jingling with ticks. And, I'd think they'd be awfully tough with all the exercise they get, including the flying to get away from Artan. Please educate me about the significance of the beard??? Is it prestigious to get a big turkey/turkey with a long beard?
