Thanks for that info, I asked as I am from VA as well and still have a couple hundred saws there. You would be 3.5 - 4 hours from me, so not close enough for me to help with a used saw.
Hello, sorry for not answering sooner, I have been near the mountains with my friend and there is no internet service there.
No, he looked at it and said it had caps on the adjustment screws; he would have to break them off and use a special tool other than a normal screwdriver. It would have probably voided the warranty. Besides, the saw had a probably putting out too much bar oil and the problem with the chain jumping off made me not to want to continue to use the saw.
These poulans are a mild pain to tune without the splined tool. Its easy enough to push an electrical connector over the splines to turn or take the needle out and cut a slot in the top. I'm sure your saw just needed some carb adjustment and you would have been much happier with it.
Kimberly as others say go for that! One of the best saws Poulan made! Dex won't sell you junk either he knows his saws. Guido is also a good man to buy from! Long standing reputation and well worth the drive if you could do it. Another option Kimberly is the best $200 dollar saw I have found that has a BIG cult following on other forums like AS is the Poulan 50cc http://www.amazon.com/Poulan-Pro-PP5020AV-20-Inch-Carrying/dp/B0052EL9YU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429965632&sr=8-1&keywords=poulan+chainsaw I have used it as well and its head and shoulders above the chepo little brother you purchased…. It really is a perfect firewood saw! http://www.vminnovations.com/Browse_560/Chainsaws.html?sort=&show=40&page=1&manuf=0&pm=17&px=455&attr=yes&xattr_Power Source=Gas&gclid=CjwKEAjw9uypBRD5pMDYtsKxvXcSJACcb9AYVAYhDjnRcp5XyP40zYTrftGRnvQIqZzz367ojBfohxoC3o_w_wcB Here is also another option buying refurbished. 2 of my Echo saws are from refurb sales at Home Depot and they work fantastic… If your a member at Arboristsite you could also look hard at the used saws there you may find something there too. We also have classifieds however they are not as large as AS but its worth a shot. Lots of guys here and over there fix up saws and sell older ones in good shape as well.
Used saws are hit and miss, unless they had been totally gone through, tested thoroughly and replaced everything that need be, even then with older Saws problems can crop up. Older Saw that have been totally rebuilt from the bottom up now that is a different story and they are not usually on the cheap
I respectfully disagree with you regarding the quality of the 5020 and the smaller Poulans. I own 2 pp4218s, destroying the first one due to my ignorance is what brought me to several saw forums. Any saw could be "junk" with operator negligence as a factor, ie poor tuning, dull chain or running crap oil/gas. I have rebuilt both 4218 and they are great saws for the money now that I know what it takes to keep them functioning properly. My wife bought me the one 4218 and even though I have many "pro" saws this one gets used often.
The 5020 is a totally different beast from the 4218. The 5020 is very similar to a 445 husky. Close in design not to surprising considering Husky owns Poulan. Its a very good saw overall. I understand where your coming from however. I had a 4620 for a long time and it was my main wood saw but needed some help to be the main saw. It got the snot kicked out of it completely by the time I used it up it have parts off of some craftsman saws ( Same saw) and some off husky saws at the saw shop. The 5020 on the other hand needs nothing out of the box but a sharp chain. All that said Id take DexterDay saw before the 5020 hands down.. I wish as hadn't crashed heres a great thread on it but the pics went with the crash.. http://www.arboristsite.com/communi...ulan-pro-5020-to-see-what-there-about.192321/
Here is a thread on the 5020 that is still having new material added by members. http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/poulan/poulan-pro-5020/
I put info in that one too. On CRS Roger has one torn down and getting ready to mod it. The thread I posted here has that too.
