As you all know, I'm gearing up to burn a wood stove next season to reduce our oil consumption. Here's my C/S/S area (I've got another cord of cherry and black birch down by the house). I'm finally feeling like I'm getting on track. The new Bearcat splitter has really increased my productivity. I've been focusing on the faster drying stuff (cherry, black birch, red maple and tulip poplar if it's easy to harvest). The pile of rounds is Ash. Later this year, I've got a bunch of oaks coming down. Two are hazards to falling on my house so the arborist will removing them. I've also got literally dozens of fully mature (20-30+" dbh) chestnut oaks in my woods that are dead or dying (local DCNR forester didn't know why). I'll work on them later.

Great looking stacks, great sounding plan. Great pic too - wood in all the various stages of processing - I was going to mention the leaner too!

It a dead oak. Been on my hit list for a while now. It will be in the stacks sooner than later.

Hoping for a dry and windy summer/fall this year to get this wood ready to burn. I've been trying to get it into smaller 3-4" splits to help the drying. I think I'll be in good shape. I won't have any 3 yr dry oak for maximum burn time this year, but that's o.k. for our first season. I've got no excuse not to have a 3+ year "hoard" of high quality oak built up over the next year or so.

Thanks for following up. We got most of them out. Got a log arch for the bigger ones. My buddy with the cherry logs got sidetracked clearing a couple acres of blowdown for pasture for his fiance's horse. We've been focusing on clearing the pasture which is a win-win, because every time I go over there, I work for a couple of hours clearing his blow down and leave with my truck bed full of hardwood firewood.

This work area is actually the landing area from when this property was logged 3 yrs ago. We just bought the land last year. Very convenient and located right along our stone lane. It's been a bit of an eyesore ever since the loggers left, but, now, it's nearly ideal for firewood processing. I just need to find someone with a decent sized tractor to level out the ground. It's got 12"+ deep tire ruts left over, that nearly stymie my 4x4 pickup truck.

I made a drag to clean up some ruts in my yard a while back. Worked out pretty good button sounds like yours are pretty deep.
edit: it could be pulled by a 4 wheeler.

I've got a couple friends with serious tractors. Just have to get them over here. I think I might also get a load of topsoil to fill in the ruts and build up the topsoil layer. It could use any help it can get. We've got very thin soil over an ironstone outcropping here.

I believe I will plant a the rest of the landing as a food plot for the local wildlife. They have alot of forest with acorn and beech nuts, but not much green forage.
