Went out and cut up this oak that has been down for at least 2 years. Beautiful day, mid 40's and blue sky. Good solid wood but wow was is full of moisture. It will be stacked for a minimum of 3 years as I'm way ahead of the game. Heavy as heck so I used the atv ramp and rolled them up on the trailer. Got home and split it up, Ive been kinda bored with all the ash we have so this was a nice break. Probably another 2-3 trailer loads left. Time for lunch. In the pile of wood you can see some of the nastiest, twisted elm I have ever seen. I'm gonna give those rounds to my good friend Backwoods Savage for his bday!
Some prime wood there ! Made some perfect splits I call the big rounds "rollers" Way to heavy to lift, but the fill the trailer fast You hand split those ?
One of my faves to cut, split and stack....nice haul, my friend!! Oh and happy retirement, BTW! Lots of time to process that stuff now!
Good stuff there man , It is a nice day to be out , I was out doin some re cutting splits , going back out , do some stackin Dennis can use a chunk of that elm to sit on , but I think he likes his milk crate better . How far are you ahead now , like 15 20 years
Bring on the elm! But I'm confused. How does one get bored cutting ash? You have to teach me on this one.
I used the hydraulic splitter Dave. Couldn't find a red milk crate so I split them horizontal. Lol. Actually I roll them right off the trailer onto my side table on the splitter.
You let me know as soon as your back to feeling better and I'll be over in 20 minutes Dennis . Think I will take the lovely Judy out to lunch while you have fun with that elm. Yes I do get bored cutting ash over and over ........I love the smell of that oak ( locust too) and splitting it was such a breeze it makes for a nice change of pace.
What was the moisture content of that oak? I was surprised that a red oak that was cut last fall (live) was down to 33% a couple weeks ago when I split it for my buddy. It was bucked to chunks, but not split. It's funny how easy oak is to split compared to elm. Laughable really.
I have no idea what the Mc was. I was suprised tho how wet it was. I went and got another load of oak today, one more trailer load to get of the oak. I snapped a few pics from standing in one spot, kinda south , west , and east. If your on a pc, zoom in and have some fun counting the dead ash. I would easily guess 40-50 trees in this little woods.
I like the oak! I'm not having fun counting the dead ash though. A couple acres of my woods are going to look like that too soon.
For some reason the dead oak I cut pulls a ton of moisture too, the dead stuff I've cut seems so wet it's slippery, and tough on my chain. Maybe it's just an oak thing? No other wood I've dealt with does this.
