Well, yeah. I think the "leaners" part was missed by a couple of guessers. The Ash is leaning on the ground, or holding it down, depending on your point of view. Since that's all it takes.....schlot wins as first guesser.
Thanks all for the congrats on retiring. Trying to give a quart of maple syrup away is no easy task with this crowd . Yes , it's the LARGER of the 2 leaners . Not ash, oak, beech , or a palm tree! It is good firewood tho. Hmmmmm, did I just give a clue? If nobody gets it I will post a close up tomorrow.
Agree definitely fairly smooth bark, but it doesn't look like beech to me. I was trying to guess what else would have smooth bark when still young. Basswood...tulip....cherry....maybe even hickory. The picture isn't all that clear. Could even be green ash. Or it could be a wood I don't have here in my woods.....I still have three gallons of maple syrup, so I'll leave the guessing to others. Did you find you had a 40/1 sap ratio, or did you get better than that? I saw someone post they got 34 or 36/1, can't remember which. How much wood did you burn to process that much syrup? Are you going to sell it? How will you market it? Is there a local co-op or store, or can you just put a sign out front? What does a gallon go for where you are? It has become very expensive up here, and, if what I am hearing is true about the run this year, it is only going to be more expensive.

No Golden at all. Season started slow but kicked in and had some real good runs. Sugar content was low , 1.5-3% and some days a bit less which is unusual for sugar maples. Collected and hauled close to 7500 gallons . Funny thing , I burn pine and willow in the evaporator this year. Neighbor cut down the willow a year ago and split it all . Can't beat that . Pine I got from Backwoods Savage with help from Pallet Pete a couple years ago. Burns hot and fast , just what is needed for an evaporator. I sell it at a few restaurants and by word of mouth. Sales have been really good this year. $60 per gallon retail but I do sell wholesale on a few accounts for .40 cents per ounce plus the cost of the bottle. Burned about 2 1/2 cords . I have a reverse osmosis that I run the sap thru and end up boiling about 8% sap. ☺

There was some of this that day we cut the wood for HD behind the house in that guys woods. You know , the day Scotty stiffed us and didn't show up. How bout I throw in a bottle of walnut syrup as well. Yes , I also tap walnuts and if you never tried it it's awesome. I sell it for $1 per ounce believe it or not. So someone with the correct answer is getting a special treat! Clue.......bark is smooth , not an oak but does have a nut. Come on guys , just gave it away!
Nope , nope, and nope. I'll give bogydave a pass as its not in Alaska but it is common in Eastern US , Ontario , and Quebec.
