I bought an 8 lb cheapo maul, the took the big grinder and reshaped it to what I wanted. Removed about a pound of material, smoothed and polished it, splits better than anything else I have used. Oh and I was bored when I decided to try this.

I'd say unless you are using hydraulics I'd invest in a maul too. For me, my maul works on wood that the X27 can't handle.

X-27 is ok, seems to knick and ding "more easily" than it should. I've got a Lowes splitter (dont know whats it called its got a spreading head) that I routinely use. Its splits pretty much every thing I want. But then again I typically only split dried chunks into smaller splits for my stove before taking them to the house.

I have the 27, 15 and 7. Love all three of them. I also have a 30 year old ax that a friend of my pop gave me. Love that thing. Not a fiskar but great piece nonetheless

Just grabbed their last one online. $38.74 with shipping/sales tax to my address (Cedar Falls IA is about 2 hrs to my northeast.)

Still that's better than the $43.03 that Amazon has been wanting the past 2 days & $49.95 my local Walmarts are asking...Should see it in about a week...I'm in no rush....Never seen it less than $39.95 anywhere, last year between Thanksgiving & Christmas it stayed that price the whole time.Bailey's had it a while back for that, but shipping was another $12-13 in addition.

Have been wanting one for a while - had the X25 since May 2011 & its great. But some wood just laughs at it - like most Hickory over 8"-10",even most of my straight grained White Oak the same size. Not to mention those large gnarly Apple rounds that I grabbed 2 months back...I normally use 12lb sledge & 1 or 2 of my 5lb twisted wedges for the stubborn stuff - that's still easier than the ol' 20lb Monster Maul now that I'm older....

Will be interesting to see how it works on the ''in between'' stuff''...

Yep that's what I used it for today.
I also use it if I need to Re split a few pieces, and When I split to check moisture content.
I keep it outside under cover so it is always right there never have to go fetch it

According to FedEx tracking,my X27 should arrive on Monday 12/9. I dropped a 17" Hickory snag yesterday so it'll be interesting how it performs on the bigger rounds.A few have some knots & overgrown bumps.....Wood is quite dry & with the temps forecast for no more than 15-20 degrees, that should really help with busting 'em open...

Like I said I have the X 25 and never used an X 27, I am curious whether there is a significant difference or not, So let me know what you think when you get it

I have a couple of broken mauls Rather than replacing the handle which cost almost as much is a Whole new maul, I just go buy a new one.
I have the X 25 but I believe I still need a regular maul in my arsenal.
That's the thing I really like about the Fiskars, With my terrible aim I have not screwed up the handle yet

Agreed. it's really not worth replacing handles on old mauls, not if you are buying them anyway.
And that's kind of the point I was making with that post, is that all the old conventional mauls and axes I have owned, and I mean ALL of them,,,, the handles have come loose and eventually broken off. After 3 years with my Fiskars the handle is still as tight as it was the day I bought it. And from what I've heard with other Fiskars owner that have managed to break their handles (after all nothing is indestructible), they've all managed to get free replacements from the company no questions asked. I don't know of any other maul companies that do that?

Yep, I remember reading about 4-5 people that got new ones.
As a matter of fact that's the real reason I bought one, Because I heard that handles were so strong.
I don't know though if I didn't do most of my splitting with hydraulics, With my bad aim I may have broken mine
