Well he's having some pain when he poops, we have him on some doggie pain killers and special dog food from the vet. After shopping around a bit, and consulting with friends and neighbors, we've found a very good old school vet - Dr Mary - who will do the procedure for under $1000. She's had a local practice for over 30 years, and she said she's done 5 of them. He is scheduled for his surgery next month.
I will never judge someone for putting out money on there dog/family member. I'm a believer and laying out a plan on how much you are willing to spend and hold to it. I have 4 dogs and they are definitely part of the family. But, I would never allow our family financial hardship from trying to save on. We literally have thousands invested in them just from visits and teeth issues. Our smallest one is having liver, pancreatis and heart problems and she is on some pills right now and if this doesn't help her we will put her down, I'm not going to let her be in pain.
I just saw this thread. Otis is adorable. My wife and I don't have kids, but we have dog kids. So we know how this goes. I'm glad you found a vet to perform the surgery for him. Keep us updated, and were sending him our prayers.
After all; dog is God spelled backward!!! Dogs aren't my whole life.................they make my life whole.
Best of luck on his surgery Shawn. I never had pets growing up but my wife and I have 2 cats we'd be lost without. It's amazing how they become part of the family. Best wishes man..
Otis is home! He's been at the animal hospital since Tuesday evening. His surgery went very well, and now everything is back where it should be - except for his nuts! Sorry little buddy! He's supposed to be a cone head, but he really hates it and he can slip out of it. So we took it off to let him relax a little. We're so happy to have him home! Thanks everyone!
Not sure if this will help but I thought I would offer it incanse you can use it. I had my mothers dog (miniature poodle)during and after his neuter, the cone was a losing proposition. I cut off the leg of one my husbands thermal underwear pants. Tied a knot where the thigh used to be, cut a hole for a tail and arms/legs, and used the ankle cuff as the head opening. Worked wonderful and frankly the lil guy was much more comfortable. Actually, there are some womens pantyhouse that are "tummy control" all the way down to upper thigh. Cut the legs off them, and a hole for his tail, and they stay on really well since they are spandex.
Thanks for the idea! He doesnt seem interested in licking his wounds so far, but we were a little worried about what to do for overnight. Great idea - thanks!
Shawn Curry I just found this, glad to see Otis is home, and do I get good. Don't blame you on bit on spending the $ on your pup... I'd hate to know what I have in our lab, all worth it!
Glad Otis is safe and home, Shawn Curry! Good idea, wildwest, panty "house" Who'da thunk, a house full of panties workin for a dog
Shawn Curry So glad to hear the dog is doing o.k. Must have been stressful. We've got an inflatable collar if you want to borrow it. More comfortable than the hard E-collar for the dog and way cheaper than a second operation to put the stitches back in. Just give me a holler if you want to borrow it.
Otis is home! That's great Shawn Curry ... Yeah, when Giz was cut 4 years ago, the cone worked but drove her nuts. Good idea wildwest ... I wish I'd thought of that.
