They're BAD this year. I must have brushed 20 of the little buggers off of me while I was milling those slabs last Sunday. Somehow I managed to avoid actually getting bit, but the dog did. Thanks for the recommendations on repellant! I'll be getting some of that ASAP!
I got mine at an Amish feed store down in Mio a few years ago, and I haven't even used the first gallon I made. The directions will tell you how to mix, and you can get it on Amazon. I think this is supposed to be used as a dip for dogs, but it seems to work well on my clothes. Here's the one I got a few years ago. Still have over 2/3rds gallon of the first gallon.
I think it's meant to kill off anything that's gotten on the dog. If you read the ingredient list on Sawyers, it's Permethrin and a whole lot of inert stuff (whatever that might be). They also use something else, and there may be some sort of bonding agent so it adheres to clothes, although I don't know that. Mine is Permethrin and water, so I thought to myself, "self, why pay a premium for mostly water?". At what should amount to about a buck per gallon, it was worth a shot. I've used this stuff and it seems to do well at keeping me mostly tick-free. I'll be dosing my pant legs much better this year, as well as any spots where there's a cuff.
If anyone is interested, the AdvantixII has a somewhat oily consistency, which must help it stay on the dog. The Permethrin spray diluted with water is much more fluid and .......watery. No experience with Sawyer's yet.
Yes, Oliver! Tested positive for Lyme one year, never had any symptoms, it's my understanding many dogs who test positive don't develop the disease anyway. I treated him anyway and now they all get the vaccine and flea/tick stuff in the warmer months. The whole pack is going to the vet for the yearly check, vacs, heart worm test etc next week.
That probably puts a smile on the vet's face.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Its high enough with 1 dog so I can imagine the hit you take Dave.
All the pooches got their collars this week. Samson had two on his ear - he's kind of slow and drags through anything low hanging. He has also found a his way under the woodpile and flushed some bunnies, hoping tick magnets
My vet discourages vacine if the dog test lyme positive. BUT, still very important to keep using Adnantix or anorther product. Does anyone spray around their yard esp. Near the edge of the lawn?
We get ticks 12mo/yr 1) We are in a very heavy tick / tick-borne disease area. 2) We have between 4-6 dogs and one cat at any time. 3) We Frontline our dogs and cats 12 mo/yr. We have had 70+ degree days in Jan and Feb and likewise get tick (dead) on our dogs/cat all year long. 4) All of our dogs get the Lyme vaccine, but we have had some who still get "Lyme disease" due to overwhelming infections. 5) Permathrin is great! Use it wherever and whenever you can! 6) Check yourself for ticks every day! If you have a significant other, then get naked and "explore" each other's bodies for ticks. It's awesome fun and may save your life...
