Thanks to you guys I have learned how to get firewood for free. Being laid off has taught me to prepare ahead, so now I am preparing by getting wood. Landscapers were dumping wood away (the horror), so I asked and got 3 loads in my SUV. Yesterday was a scrounge find and again don't know what it is.
Welcome to the Forum! You have some tough wood there to I.D... Might help to see some split. Pic #1. - looks like it has some punk going on. Might be a softer wood, maybe Aspen or maybe pine. Big growth rings. Pic #2 - might be more than one species there. The barkless wood looks a little like elm or locust to me. Watch those vines! Pic #3 - looks like black birch and pine to me
The barkless stuff might be a mix of black locust and elm. In the first pic, the piece on the right with the yellowish wood is black locust. The one on the left could be elm. In the second pic, the piece with bark is black locust and those vines are poison ivy. I'm guessing black locust for that entire pile. Third pic looks like more of a mixed bag, but the pieces with dark sapwood and light heartwood are gray birch. I think the "pine" looking stuff is probably eastern hemlock. Welcome to the club! Looks like you got a really nice find there.
Picture 3 is a very cool looking piece of wood. Seems like it wood be great for making some type of end table, or something. Welcome to the forum, you'll like it here!
Welcome to the best and friendliest forum on the subject, EsLaReyna! Great score on that scrounge. I've been doing a little more of that here recently, too. Most likely, S.C. but could be creeper, too, or perhaps regular ivy... Unless there's a telltale distinction between PI and all the other vines that adhere like that. Either way I'd be wearing gloves from the word go- no matter what
There is... You get an itchy rash from PI that can last for weeks. PI definitely looks like that, but then again it could be a some other harmless vine like you said. How about this: you can go ahead and rub it all over your arms a legs, and if you don't break out in a rash, then we'll know it's not PI!
Welcome to the forum EsLaReyna. Looks mostly like elm and locust. Great firewood. Some of that reminds me of some I was splitting earlier today. Great time and a good way to spend your time laid-off by gathering firewood. The more, the merrier! Try for the 3 year plan if at all possible.
You got the best kind of wood there is FREE!!! Welcome And yes do watch the vines I got into some PI last winter. Didn't expect that in January.
I'd say the wood with bark and a vine on it could be Black Locust. The barkless stuff isn't Black Locust, maybe elm? The odd tree in the third picture is some sort of ornamental cherry. The pieces to the left of the center, oddly shaped round, are definitely ornamental cherry. I guess the oddly shaped piece is too.
Thank you so much guys! I am loving the community here and all the advice. I am really on a roll scrounging for wood. Guess it's beginners luck or timing. The family and neighbors think I'm crazy for getting it now. I just don't want to have to worry that I'm short later. I know some won't be good for this winter, but tomorrow we will be going to the state park to get some more wood (3 year plan may be a goal). I already got pics just not sure if hubby's chainsaw Husquarvna 450 will go through some of the wood. See what I mean...
Would love to split it but I was told we need a good amount for splitting before we rent a splitter. I can do many things but don't have the splitting ability yet. Soon we will have to get one.
You don't have to split all your wood with it but ya might want to get yourself a maul or an X27 That 450 will work ,It will just take a little longer My 445 gettin er done
Yep, of you don't own a splitter, rent one when you have enough to keep you busy all day. Welcome to FHC!
Wow - you are on a roll! The first pic looks like hard/sugar maple, and pics 2 and 3 are soft maple, probably red. The only thing I'd be worried about there is that you need a permit to cut on state land. I think they're pretty cheap, and I think anyone can get them - i dont think you don't need special training or anything. Not sure if that applies in this particular case, but you'll want to ask, to make sure the state DEC police don't come and pinch your stash.
