Just got another 4 cord of pine at $70 a cord scheduled to be delivered next weekend. I was talking to my wood supplier about next year's order and he jokingly asked if I wanted any more pine since he just got another 4 cord of pine dumped on his property. He didn't believe me at first when I said yes. It took some convincing for him to understand I was serious. Between this and next year's 10 cord of hardwood + whatever pine I buy off him, I will finally get close to being 3+ years ahead.
I prefer cheap wood. I do not have the time to scrounge, buck, split, and stack all of my wood. For the amount of wood I go though, 8+ cord, it is far better to purchase my wood. In bulk I can get hardwood at $150 a cord. I am getting the pine at $65-$70 a cord. The six cord of pine I got was dry and burns easily. My wife likes it since it is easy to get going for her, and the splits are lighter than hardwood. Makes shoulder season cheap and easy.
I can understand your predicament with time. I also undserstand that you use the pine for the shoulder season, that works! I don't have alot of time either, but make it for when it comes to wood supply. I get all hardwood grapple loads for abou $100/cord. The pine that I do run into also goes to the shoulder season.
I've looked into this. I can do 8 cord of uncut logs for $800. But, how my house/property is set up, the only place they could drop the load is on the other side of the property and it would make a mess over there. Plus, moving the 8 cord to the other side of the property one wheelbarrow full at a time didn't seem that pleasant. I still might do that in the future once I get far enough ahead as I have thought about buying two loads for $1600.
between 4-5 cords and maybe 1+/- cord of shoulder wood. The grapple loads are about 7-8 cords. I use some property at a friends house and buck and stack new wood there. I rotate 3 yr old wood to my home where it's restacked in the spring. I usually have to dedicate at week or so on either end of the burn season for wood. Scrounging inbetween.
I have begged people to let me take it before but the guy was adamant I would burn my house down with it lol. He finally caved after about a week and hey guess what I am still alive
I have been fighting the pine misconception one misinformed soul at a time. The problem is there are too many misinformed souls to win.
Were still burning pine & hemlock, when it was real cold we burned sugar maple & beech at night but mixed the pine & hemlock in with the sugar maple during the day. Once were done. we'll have 1.8 cord or 6 NY face cord of shoulder season wood.
Same experience. I originally asked my supplier if he had any junk wood/uglies lying around that I could have on the cheap for my outdoor fire. He said he had a ton of pine that the boy scouts never took and he can't give away. My eyes lit up like a child on Christmas morning... or a drunk during happy hour, your choice in which example is more appropriate. Anyhow, when I said I would take all of it, I had to convince him my house wasn't going to explode from using pine. Took two weeks.
Yep. At some point I will order uncut logs and split everything myself. But right now, I need to get to 40-50 cord of wood cut, split, and stacked so I am 3-5 years ahead. And I need to insulate more to be sure my wood usage is under control. I did a cost/time breakdown. This is the way to go right now.
