I was just offered a deal I can't turn down. However I have never been far enough ahead to be worried about punk. I have permission to start storing some hoard in an old machine shed that a friend of mine who quit farming has. This will really help keep the wood as dry as possible and help motivate the get years ahead plan into action. I am wondering though do I if storing for years need to keep any punk segregated to a different stack. Do any of you know if punk if stacked with good wood will infect it or once dry will punk stop. I would hate to come out 5 years from now and have entire stacks of punk.
Some wood types are more likely to get punky like birch , maple & poplars. Staying went a long tome cause it to rot, Contagious , not really unless it stays wet for long periods. Dry will stop it from rotting more, the bacteria needs moisture . I'd keep the punky stuff segregated, less BTU value & it's a sponge that'll hold moisture a long time.
As above, rot happens only if the wood is allowed to stay wet for a long time. You'll sometimes hear talk of "dry rot" but there really isn't any such thing. If the wood is dry when it goes in the shed, and if the shed doesn't leak, it'll be fine.
You get enough punks together and it will be contagious. Oh yea the wood will be fine as long as its not allowed to stay wet for any length of time as others have stated.
No. It only passes from one to the other if both are wet. Just make sure it is dry before putting it in the barn. Then worry not. I recall not that long ago seeing some wood that had been in a barn 12 years. Wish it were mine! Also, yesterday I brought some of our punky oak to the porch to burn in April. That is from 15 years ago and it spent at least 10 years flat on the ground. Still burnable.
