I've been scouring craigslist, ebay, local papers, used car lots and cap dealers within 200 miles for a year. Grrrrrr! I've found a few but not exactly like I wanted and usually 200 + miles away and usually gone by the time I find it and make the call.New ones are around $2500 (that wasn't happening ) and a couple manufacturers don't even make them for my 03. 2 weeks ago I gave up looking ,,, built a raised platform in the bed of my truck and bought materials for some full length slide in tool boxes. 2 days ago I get an RSS feed for a cap 45 miles from me . EXACTLY like want I want! Drove down yesterday morning and snagged it up. $300 !!!! One of my vehicles doubles as a service truck for my commercial trucks, equipment, and buildings. The regular truck cap was OK at keeping things dry but access and organization flat out sucked. Got the bed cleaned out last nite and got it on. Pretty pumped about ease of access , time savings and having a portable toolbox !!!! Seems like I spend more time running to find tools than than actually fixing the problem. Problem solved !!!!
Nice! Looks like an ARE cap. I have had the same cap since '02 and it should be going onto to it's 5th work truck later this year
I've got one sitting in my yard that came off the Dodge I sold a few months ago. Been on craigslist with only a few calls so far at $350. Might need to lower the price I guess.
Yeah, it is an ARE. Other than a few scratches and dings ( it will prolly have more in a couple months) this one is NICE shape. Didn't come with keys so I ordered new tumbler/keys for it last nite. The last 2 months the GF and I have been working on office space in a commercial building I own and it has been such a huge hassle not having all the tools and necessary hardware portable. Looking forward to getting locks on and the tools in it!!!! Just wished I had found it before I built that false floor in the bed. I'll try it out for awhile this way. If I don't like it I'll saw it out.
I found out in my search that almost all caps are model, make and year specific depending on how often bed design was changed. I feel like I hit the lottery finding this one so close to home. Contractor caps are even more rare .
Agreed. I drove to Connecticut from Syracuse area 5 years ago to pick this one up after looking locally for 6 or more months for one that wasn't $2k. The one I have will fit the GMC I have now but it will need to be painted since it's red and the truck is black. I also don't do as much work on the road anymore so I'm thinking a lockable tonneau cover will be in my future.
This one was at a scrap yard. When I got there and saw the address was a scrap yard I knew they had already made their $ off the truck that it came in on. I spanked'em down $50 on the price. I prolly could have spanked'em more but I was hungry after a REALLY LONG HUNT and knew someone would be there after me and realize the value !!!!!!!! SOLD !
Agreed. I ran the truck with basic mechanical tools . Now that I have more room and it will be lockable I'll carry more and I'll carry my carpenter tools also along with nuts, bolts , screws, nails and other necessary hardware. I'm hoping it will free up some time from "running circles"! Now I'll have to watch I don't overload it !
Yep, I have to look for one for my Dakota pickup. It rained unexpectedly on Thursday night and all my straps were in their container and got all wet . So, today I'll spend some time get the straps dried out. Wife says buy a container for the straps that is water proof. That's an option.
