I guess they empty towards the rear?
I've stood there in the small exam room while the vet lubes up a glove with paper towel catch.
Youtube should have something on it - need to man up and figure it out

I can help, pm me if you are interested. With a Yorkie you GF smaller hands might work better. To clarify, we are talking about compacted anal glands, right?

    yes.
Why it shouldn't be public record even if nasty smelly, and involving sticking a gloved finger up a dogs bum - for the sake of helping anyone else out:faint: fire away

    Awesome video.

Thanks, I was thinking about how to word it without being too graphic. So, I had a personal dog or two over the years, it was just easier to do it at home. For others, it might save them $$ and time. It is VERY uncomfortable for our lil friends, so learning to do it at home usually brings immediate relief instead of waiting for an appt.

Here's a couple other thoughts I had after watching that great video:

Gloves, used them at the clinic, not with my personal dogs. Make sure your nails are trimmed and filed to avoid injury. Also, gloves prevent any of the nasty smelly stuff from getting under fingernails.

Lubricant, vaseline and ky jelly works great, mineral oil or olive/vegetable oil will work in a jam.

Which hand on which side? I always switched hands for one side or the other, didn't know about the one handed trick.

Many times one side is consistently fuller than the other....

Did not have the odor control back then. Used wet paper towels to wipe well, and recently using baby diaper wipes.

Libby's canned pumkin has high fiber (not the sweetened kind for pie, just plain ol pumpkin), maybe a 1/2 teaspoon or so a day will help him do some of the expressing himself?

Bigger dogs you can kneel on one knee and straddle their tummy over the other. Little dogs, either have another restrain them or if desperate wrap them tight in a towel like a burrito.
