Is this soft maple? Its got little black spots/holes throughout the inside. Some pieces were light, and others were fairly heavy.
its funny you say that! I thought it was ash until i cut it down. Then i was convinced it was something else. The little black holes are new to me, never seen them before.
The lighter splits could be parts of the tree getting punky. I don't mind that stuff, it's great shoulder season wood as long as it totally dries out before burning. It does look like ash to me as well.
To my knowledge, I have never seen basswood, so you could be right. Like most of us, we base our guess on the trees we see in our part of the country. I'm not sure if we have basswood in MD, but I have never heard of it here. Maybe I should google that.
It's also known as Linden. Its probably not...but that white wood and bark reminded me of it. I do know it will burn ...that I am sure of
Would be nice to see a pic of the tree before it was cut down. The holes are from bores finding a home. It is hard to tell but it could be basswood/AKA Linden. Or it could be ash. The bark on both can be deceiving if not being there to see up close.
Ash makes up the vast majority of what i cut and burn. This tree just seemed different. Overthinking it, i guess. This stack is all ash, except for the row to the far right, which is soft maple.
It's OK. It's great to hear differing opinions. If we don't analyze other people's thoughts, we'll quit thinking.
We've got basswood here, and its not something I cut. Mostly for to low btu, and not worth the time, or danger of felling a large tree. It's possibly basswood, and that's hard to tell by not being there.
I have drug home dogwood that I thought was ash before because of the bark. Let me guess. Some pieces were lighter than others you say? Where the lighter pieces smaller than the heavy ones? I run into that from time to time.
Love your stacks. I'm working on an ash now that I wish was elm. Hydro splitter is even having trouble with it.
Thanks. Most of the ash ive been splitting has split quite well. But there have been a few that were very difficult. Ive got a few rounds cut right now that i couldnt get with the maul. I will have to bust the wedges out for these. As for elm... well, I dont even like to talk about elm!
I just cut up a tree on Sat. that looks exactly like that, I assumed it was a Maple. I'll take a shot of a few splits tonight... It was a tree that was standing dead and fell over into a parking lot. I asked if I could take the wood and of course the bidness owner said "PLEASE take!" One thing I noticed when I split it open, it had some worms in it, caterpillar sized worms, all white. Actually they looked like albino caterpillars, and were boring tunnels in the wood. This explained why the fairly large tree (15" diameter, 40' long) fell over... Anyone know what that worm is?
