Love that TOY every time I see it. Way more utility in that than any UTV.

Installed 4 new packages/hives of bees. Extracted some honey from 2 hives that froze this winter.

It was a bad winter for everyone. A friend of mine lost 39 of 40 hives!

The GF took a bee keeping class over the winter. She decided to hold off a year or two before she got her first bees.

In contrast, I would recommend jumping in now. They really are fun and low maintenance. Once you get some you will never look back. Remember that they are really feral animals and do pretty well on their own.

She is a perfectionist; which may not be the best thing, and I have nothing to do with it other than being supportive.

    ,
That's fine, too. She can fuss with them as much as she wants or as little as she wants. They will take care of themselves either way. Just make sure to start with at least 2 hives, that way you have a decent chance to have at least one successful hive.

Started off the morning watching my little guy collect eggs all around the house and trying out the new bike the Easter bunny brought! Then went to the in-laws pond for a camp fire cook out lunch. Large Mouth Bass are in pre spawn and where fairly aggressive, pond is three years old and already catching keepers out of it!

Came home and got to work, spent the afternoon disking the freshly cleared fence rows, leveling it off and kicking up rocks and more tree roots. I've still got a lot of roots to pick up!

Last cow had her calf thus week....
    20150402_171526.jpg
This Simmental cross cow was a bucket calf I bought for my wife when we where dating, I never would have thought a bucket calf heifer would have turned out to be such a great momma cow, never have to fuss with her or the calves, and she looks after the rest of the herd and all the calves. This is calf number 5, 3 heifers and two bull caves. We named this one Mouse due to her color.

[IMG]I suppose if you don't know, you don't know. My wife is still laughing, yeah she's from a ranch. A bucket calf is a calf that it's mother could not or would not let nurse. The bucket has a nipple the size of a cow's teet mounted on the bottom and the bucket is filled with milk or milk replacer.

It must be that time of the year. I've been tearing out fence and caragana shrubs the past week too. Put in a few wood posts with the pounder, still a fair amount of frost in the ground, but went in fairly easily for this early.

I thought maybe it was raised off milk in a bucket. I envisioned it drinking milk out of a bucket like a dog drinks water. Then was like I have never seen that? But I dont know it all either?

The nipple thing makes more sense.

[IMG][IMG]Some bucket have multiple nipples for feeding more than one. Found this picture of a barrel feeder, never seen one of these. I would think the bottom half must be filled with sand to keep it stable. They can get pretty aggressive.

No nipples on the buckets here. Can make for a few fun days training them to the bucket but Its worth it in the end. Dogs drink with their tongue, Cattle slurp or suck much like we do.
