So the Arborist was here. Nice guy. The old rotten double trunk maple he knew well. Apparently it was wounded during Hurricane Gloria in the 80s and he has warned two previous owners it had to go but they didn't want to spend the $$. Its in really bad shape, one of the nearly 3ft trunks is almost rotten clear through to daylight.

Anyway, some potentially good news. The electric company has cabled a phone pole to this thing, apparently illegally. The arborist is going to talk to the town tree warden and they will work try to get the electric company to pay for the removal. Otherwise I'm probably looking at 2-3k or more.. this tree is that big and that far gone.

On the other hand, he had concerns about a few other trees in the yard. We have two maples near the driveway that he thinks where damaged when the previous owners excavated to rebuild the septic and need fertilizing, and the big white pine that looses branches every big storm he recommended to get a crown pruning. But that's not such a big deal if we can get the big tree taken care of free.

And he said that EAB is here in town. Gonna be a lot of ash available for firewood soon :(

Going to be a tough day of drinking beer and throwing wood on the smoker.

I'll be in the shop all day today.

I've got a few saws yet to get done.

I used to make 35 - 40 gallons of wine a year. If it didn't turn out just so after a few rackings, I'd distill it into brandy.

No wonder my liver made me stop drinking alcohol.

Went to REI this morning and picked up a new hybrid bike. It's been 10 years since I rode, it's something my wife and I can do together this summer.

I always enjoyed riding, something I will get back into once the kids can keep up. Its more a sport to me than just jogging, so exercise I can actually look forward to.

Biking is great exercise. Haven't had much time last couple years. Went on portions of RAGBRAI a few times a while back. Lots of fun. If you haven't done it you might want to look into it.

Worked on my shed project for a little while today. Starting to take shape. Just needs a roof....and rafters and purlins and siding and a door...otherwise just about got it whipped! :)

Don't want to be the first to tell you, but judging from your avatar, it affected more than your liver!

Heavy winds here today. I tried to fire the mud oven but the winds were too blustery. I gave up and cooked inside. I looked out the window to see if the fire in the oven was dying out. Some embers blew out of the oven and lit the leaves on the ground on fire. It got a little exciting for a minute.

After about 8 years of hinting (ok, nagging) my wife to learn how to sew, I gave up and popped open youtube in the iPad to figure out her sewing machine.

I am proud to say I can sew. It ain't pretty, but it looks secure. I couldn't see paying for "weekend work" jeans when I had so many decent pairs with busted knees that just needed a needle and some thread.

So, do I hand in my man card now?

Nope, you keep the card. I sew hems and small repairs on my clothes too. And I do laundry, dishes and vacuum to rugs. Today's man is well versed
