Years ago my neighbor bought 600 oak cabinet doors that were going to be scrapped because the order was made wrong (1/2" too narrow). They were sitting out by the dumpster. He paid $.25 each for them and lined the walls of his shop/basement with them. It looks awesome.
That is fantastic. Just one word of warning though. Please do not forget what he asked and what you promised. "...and offered them to me if i promised not to sell them, which i did." Therefore I'd be very careful even with your friends making things from this. It might be tough not making things from this stuff, but don't risk trouble. If you have to burn it, thank the Lord you got it and enjoy the heat.
Packed for retail, I got a feeling that the price on what you have was at the least $10.00 per piece. They look like they were joined so it might be more. Somebody lost a lot when they got wet. Burn it and it looks like you have in the least a $40,000 pile of firewood.
One possibility I'm thinking of is glued together (with 3/4 plywood underneath for support) as a top for a cabinetmaker's bench. Different Acacia's can be quite hard/dense & shock/wear resistant.Black Locust,Honey Locust,Mesquite & the seldom seen Kentucky Coffee Tree are distant cousins, all in the Legume family.Hawaiian Koa is also an Acacia, more like Black Walnut in density, quite rare & expensive now,not much is harvested. Pro - they look to be about a foot wide & close to 2 inches thick. Con - Their short lengths may be a problem.
My immediate reaction as the same as Lukem: flooring. How much is free of mold and mildew? Workbench tops is another great idea. Or desk top. That wood just looks too pretty to burn. Great acquisition. Guess they got reimbursed by insurance as a complete write off, so the stuff cannot be sold.
Who's a sign maker here, or anyone have a router/engraver set up for producing some FHC plaques for, say, awards at GTG's, or some such situation here on the forum? Just a thought- and a neat backstory with every piece! Shame to see it burn, but I say the same thing when my saw or splitter reveals beautiful figured grain- "it'll look good burnin' too!"
Like Beetle-Kill said about Stinny's upchuck worthy video post- "Nooooooooo. NoNoNoNoNo. ....NO!!!!! uh uh, no." Don't do it Greg , take a deep breath, man... Put the box of Acacia down!
I'll tell you this right up front. 99 is very glad that I didn't come across a deal like this because those bad boys would be laying around forever waiting for something to happen to them! And it wouldn't involve a fire!!
Well it sounds like the crux of the deal was pretty clear, do not sell & they are destined to go in your wood boiler. They ARE NOT WOOD MAKING PROJECTS. Being that you have other people involved you are going to have a pretty hard time living up to your word. I'd chuck the whole box, cardboard and all unopened into the boiler. BTW, breathing mold after planning/cutting can't be good for you either.
The deal was not to sell em , there was nothing about making other things out of them, what's wrong with that
