Looks like some sassy you have there. Sweetest smelling wood there is. Cut some just to enjoy the flavor!

    Could be cotton wood.
The last pic looks real similar to the cottonwood here.

Sassafras usually has a yellowish greenish color inside.
but could be, sure a big one.
like Dennis mentioned, does it have a sweet rootbeer odor

Looks and now sounds like sassy. As for the smell, if the wood is green, you will not like the smell of cottonwood. After it is dry, then it is fine; sort of like my boots.

BTU rating is 18 for sassafras that's right around black cherry and red maple

I would say it is not sassafrass. Looks more like cottonwood to me. Sassy has a different color on the inside.

So what's the deal is sassafras greenish on the inside, or is Cottonwood greenish on the inside?
This is bugging the crap outta me, there's some big chunks of wood there if its sassafras I would go get some more if its Cottonwood I don't want to bother

Cottonwood is in the poplar genus and has greenish heartwood. The younger branches tend to have the horizontal lenticels like birch - I think I see some in one of the photos. They tend to get massive - so given the amount there, my guess is cottonwood.

That said, I'd still take it. I sure wish I had more shoulder wood for this year.

Probably is Cottonwood I just want it to be sassafras, doesn't taste like root beer it just tastes like wood, yes I did:D
yeah I was thinking I should probably go get a load of the big stuff anyway cuz I do need some more shoulder wood.
How much worse BTU wize can it be than pine.
I was also wondering how many people have actually had any sassafras to know the difference
