What is this? I'm thinking black walnut? It's too heavy for willow I think. I got it from my buddy's stack that had been sitting many many years.
Must be black locust, because it looks nothing like the honey locust in my yard. I can say it burns well. It looks like I'll be getting black locust from a friends very large front yard tree that needs to come down.
i was gonna say it must be honey cuz it looks nothing like the black i see around here. you mentioned walnut and willow which are both quite lightweight. locust however is quite heavy. the grain does look rather tight... to me the bark looks like sass, but i dont see any orange which may be because it is aged. if you chip off a fresh piece is there an orange tone to it? what does it compare to when burning? coal up much?
I'll see if I can hatchet some off. I won't burn any fire until this weekend it looks, if the weather peeps are correct.
As a disclaimer, my Honey locust in my yard, and all the ones I've seen are not the wild variety, but rather hybrid Yardbirds.
The undomesticated honey locust looks identical to demosticated yard stock, except for the gnarly spikes.
