Pulled all 54 taps this evening. They barely ran at all since Friday. Too cold. They were dripping pretty good when I pulled them this afternoon, but the night time temps the next several days aren't supposed to get too far below freezing so it was time to yank 'em. I'll do a full thread on my season in the next couple days when I get all the photos and vids compiled.... We ended up with almost 10 gallons of syrup this year, which was much better than I expected. Latest I've ever made syrup, I usually have all my taps pulled and done by mid March. Finished off almost 4 gallons yesterday alone!
It's been a ridiculous season here. Honestly I'm shocked I got 10 gallons of syrup, I was hoping for 4 or 5. But we had several days of really good flow, and I used sugar maples exclusively, picking the sweetest trees with the bigger canopies this year. My sugar content per gallon (in the sap) was very high, I averaged out to around 35-40:1.... I'll do a full thread with description and report on it later this week. I'm just flat out exhausted, it's a chit-pile of work, and I didn't have much free time during the past 3.5 weeks....
That sounds like a pretty good season! Glad you were able to get it done and got that much syrup. Looking forward to the pics.
Who would want to give away any maple syrup that you have worked so hard for? Savory every mouthful each time you have some.
Lol Woodwidow, I'll never use all of it......I usually give quite a bit away to family and friends. Keep an eye on FHC for a syrup giveaway soon (yes I'm dead serious) . Stay tuned!!
My youngest boy and my daughter were integral parts of the operation this year......I wasn't even going to make it this year but they talked me into it.....lol They gain memories that will last a lifetime doing it!
View attachment 53522 Nice pictures of the kids Scotty...Passed a large patch of woods on the interstate a month ago and all the trees seemed to be tapped with a clear plastic bag catch system, I assume this was maple, have you ever seen tapping done this way? Never mind, 2 seconds of googling and I found my answer.
Nice job Scotty Overkill ... and nice pics. Can't believe you'd let a drop get away. I figgered it was the go juice that kept you runnin' 24/7...
