all the shorties have lower spring counts - made em ride a bit "better" as they weren't intended to be loaded like rented mules. Had better flex for off road. LWB with the heavy half package had 3/4T springs, which can be swapped out if you ever wanted to find a set. It's one thing to have an unloaded LWB skipping across bumps - not much fun in a SWB
That must be why I love that truck! We don't use it much anymore except for recreational, so the is ideal.
You want a truck that rides nice? Here's how to do it. It's all in how the truck is spec'd out. Half-tons with all the bells and whistles are going to have softer suspensions than basic work trucks 3/4t and up. Especially from makers that got into the truck market to cash in all the demand from the Soccer Moms and Harry Homeowners. That's one reason I'm a big fan of the SRW 1-tons. Not any bigger or worse on fuel than a 3/4t but better gear in the rear. That truck in the pic rode and drove like a towncar around town. As you can see, it sits pretty level without the headlights pointing to the moon. That's a dripping wet load of Cherry that it's hauling.
MasterMech did you send the old GMC down the road? I can't find one down here without a gooseneck hitch - you now what those have been through
My 3/4 ton sagged some and had lots of body roll. I thought about putting bags under her. I ended up getting a 1 ton and it has helper springs. I don't think bags are needed but if I find the trailer I want they might be. I full load of wood in the bed and a 18ft trailer loaded with wood and supplies might justify the bags. I did have a 84 with 1 ton running gear. I miss that truck. It would not sag and it would not ride nice and it would not get over 10mpg. Not a good body panel on her, it was the perfect woods truck.
Still have it. Sitting in my driveway wanting brakes and a muffler. Doesn't get used now that I have my Silverado.
Your truck reminds me of my old truck. Mine was a regular cab which helped in the tight woods. A truck like yours is extremely rare in my area.
same here Ole Blue has seen a few trips this past year since picking up my black bowtie Haven't had to drive for much wood just moving stuff from my neighbor's back yard
Squat was terrible new so I added a leaf and bagged it. The bags really made the difference. The first pic was stock with some dirt and grass. The second is bagged with wood in the bed and enough tongue weight on the trailer to crush the wheel after I disconnected. The third is a load of wet sugar maple that probably weighed more than the dirt with the bags at about half psi. I'll swear by the Firestone ride rites.
This old dog - it doesn't matter what you put on it. 1988 Ford F-250, Load of Hedge and Ash. Never been able to do anything but flatten him out and actually ride decent. lol. His name is Everette. We Hettinger's always name our trucks.
even as a chevy guy I have to give props to the 80's 3/4-1T Fords - learn to live with the 30deg of steering wheel play, you ain't goin fast anyways
Ok I am trying here, but that first picture of your truck is not with wood. Or is the wood below all of that sod????
Cut with my buddy saturday. He has an 80 f250 and it was loaded even with the bed rails and you could see that it set it below or just level was not near as high as yours. Some of it was oak that had been dead a year or two. Not sopping wet green but still wet.
There is a truck like your or maybe its an early 90s ford??? Its a square something g I needs to look but its 3 full doors like this. You dont see many of those.
