We lived in the Riverside area, not too far from where you were. I was stationed at March. Was there for three years. Loved all but the horrid smog. We came back to Maine when I got out of the service. Family here.
So, I hope you took a lot of pictures and will be willing to share some of your adventures. Nice to have you back.

Welcome back Dave. I was wondering how many miles you'd get on the bike. Glad you like it too. Perhaps in the future we may have to plan another trip out there then we could take a few rides together on the bikes. Where you took that first picture, it looks very familiar. Been there a few times but it has now been too long since being there.

Not sure how I'll do on the bike this year as I have pending hip surgery and this time the recovery may take a bit longer. Still, I remember it being good therapy so will be on the bike whenever I can. Only my bike is a bit different and especially easy on the rear end.

Riding some here. Been cool & windy but felt good to get a couple 20 mile rides in.
Paved bike trails. Some slick spots but the 29er made it thru OK, slow & easy.

Several hard core riders here have studded tires, several have "fat bikes"
I kinda like going a few thousand miles south for riding that time of the year

My brother is a great believer in recumbent bikes. Took him a bit to get used to the first one but since then, he has done a lot of riding on them.

He may know about Rans recumbents. In 2000, I visited their Kansas aircraft manu facility. Building kit airplanes doesn't have a big profit margin and part of the facility is their recumbent bike division, which does very well. They use aircraft grade 4130 chromoly steel & aluminum tubing too, so there's a lot of shared fabricating that helps their bottom line. If anyone's interested in their operation, it's quite impressive and all because of one man... Randy Schlitter. www.rans.com
