This is my first post on these forums. Like so many others I was on that other site for quite some time. It was time to move on. Not going to elaborate. Got this Apple earlier this week. I could not believe how big the 2 old trees were. One had a triple trunk! They came from a suburban neighborhood not a farm or orchard. Heavy wood too. Never burned Apple before, but who could pass up a freebie like this? Going to get it cut and split and let it age for at least a couple of years. Anyone out there ever burn Apple? Take care, Tim
Welcome aboard "Tim". Lots of good folks and info all over this site, most of us probably from those "other" sites at one time or another. I love your avatar wood stacks. I have burned a little apple in my earlier "scrounging" days, as I remember it burned great. Mostly ash, hickory, ironwood and oak these days as I have 25 acres full of it!
Only burned apple in an outside bon fire as brush, smells good when it's cut and when it burns. And welcome aboard.
Welcome "Tim" Apple is a good burning wood and yes it is great in the "Smoker" This site is loaded with great information and advise.
Welcome to FHC! Apple is pretty decent wood. It's like 21.5 million BTUs per cord. It's better than most maples, cherry, walnut and others.
Apple burns great! We usually give it a year or two in the stacks. As with most trees that produce fruit, it smells delicious when cutting and burning.
Welcome Tim, Save that apple for the cccold nights. It @ 27 million btu's/cord according to this: http://forestry.usu.edu/htm/forest-products/wood-heating
Welcome to FHC Tim Nice to see another Michigander , quite a few here . I had some apple a couple years ago , burned good n hot ,lasted a while , smells good too
Apple is one of the very best firewoods. I have heard that it does not last at all well if not protected, so be sure you get in split and stacked ASAP. It also makes beautiful bowls or wooden spoons, spatulas. A very warm welcome to the neighborhood. This is a very civil, friendly site, full of folks of good cheer who are very helpful.
I'd like to see what that site lists shagbark hickory at. They don't list it. I personally think that site has apple listed a lot higher btu wise than it really is, based on past burning experience and all the other charts having apple as a 20-21 mbtu wood. It's good wood, but not in the high 20's like hickory is.
I agree, I knew apple was very good, but don't remember it being that good. I thought that these "charts" were gospel based on actual tests. I burn prolly 80% beech, they show it at 27 something. I would love it to be that high but I thought it was lower than that also.
Tim, welcome to da' swamp. Do believe you'll enjoy your time here. Fantastic folks enjoying a non-judgmental atmosphere.................. and we laugh a lot..................
Nice haul man. Welcome to the site. Dont forget about the secret hand shake....the ad mins did tell you about that right....after all we are sticklers for details around here.
Welcome to FHC. I really enjoy burning Apple, and it's doing pretty well in our Match Madness tournament going on right meow.
I'm just south of apple country, major orchard territory in my part of PA......apple is a fine firewood, my experience is that it takes a long time to season for my Jotul, 3 years minimum, especially if in rounds and not split.
