I can tell you guys right now I am going to get my head and eyes checked ! It is like you need a headlamp to see the details of the chain . my head to see if I'm mental. Chris
I actually added 4 fluorescent fixtures over my sharpening area just for this reason. It aint just you Skip, at the very least, its me too ........
In this photo what the angle of cross over with the file across the bar and chain? It appears that the file is going parallel with the bar and chain. So I am asking roughly what's the angle the file should be held in reference to the bar ? Chris
And some various teeth on that chain thats it I'm going to bed Pick em apart I didn't do the gullets I know . but I was practicing
Nice job Skip .......... some of the pictures are showing a real good working corner, others are probably just fuzzy. Your eyes should be used to looking for that distinct line from top inside corner to bottom inside corner, if there is a top beak or a side beak, top plate angle and side plate angle, etc ...you HAVE to be your own worst critic !!!... gullet clean up is like wiping the table after dinner ............. it happens after all of the important stuff is finished. Just be carefull not to touch your sharp edges with the round file (its real easy to do too) or you will have to re-file that tooth Top inside corner to bottom inside corner should be the standard, IMHO. Anything else that deviates from that standard will develop a different characteristic in the cut ........... depending on what you are looking for it might be good, or it might not be so good for the wood you are cutting. It may change if you cut a different wood (most times it does, but sometimes it doesnt). You will see what I mean as you cut more and more. You dont need us to tell you anything else, you have been reading this thread and the square file thread, you have all of the pictures and some chain to compare your cutters to, you have seen what bad teeth look like, and are putting up nice pics of a good square cutter, you know what you are doing now. Its all up to you to go and cut some wood so you can see what changes the different angles do for you. You can file square now big guy, 90% of the battle is over, and you have won .................. now its the fun time of cutting with all of your chains. Now my question to you is this; After all the fuss over which file(s) you were going to use .................. which one(s) do you like best ? ** Dont forget to address your rakers, they are part of the chain too **
Thanks buddy I am still going to practice! As for files I am using bahco ( the smoothest) and pferd . I want to buy a box of save edge and a box of viiala files . that whole chain took me about an hour .
I don't line the inside corner to corner any more. I go a little higher usually for a faster cutting hungrier chain.
