I havnt even started looking at those yet. With heating oil being so low, I may just take a hard look at pre buy pricing there and weigh the difference. If oil is low enough I may just go with a more 50/50 usage than my current 90/10 that favors pellets. Lets see, if costs are close would I rather handle 40 lb bags twice a daw, clean the stove when needed and deal with uneven heat or adjust a thermostat and be warm from room to room. Pellet producers might price themselves out if they dont adjust down to market conditions the same way that they did when the prices adjusted up.
Went to TSC in Putnam today. They had Pure Fire and Instant Heat. But they were outside, uncovered, in the rain.
I was on Lowes website and noticed nearly every store in this area has between 20 and 60 tons on hand right now.
No pellet shortage here on the left coast. 3 tons of DF Pacific Pellets available on CL for $179 a ton. They may get stuck with them even at that price, as it has been in the 70s here this week. Winter here was also the warmest on record. Here is the 'shortage' as I see it here. inside outside
Exactly. We've seen pellet use increase, but people do enter and exit market every year. Low traditional fuel prices will drive a pellet exit.
$180 a ton has been the lower rate out here in Oregon for a long time (since I have been watching it anyway). $200 a ton is the average price. All we have are DF and softwood pellets here. Byproduct of the timber industry. Bear Mountain and Pacific Pellets are the largest in Oregon and they have a dozen off-brands each. Those photos I posted above are of the Bear Mountain facility on the Columbia River. There are a lot of smaller pellet manufacturers around here as well. I would think that pellets would be as cheap in Wyoming. They make them in Colorado. Shipping by rail there would only be about $30 a ton from here. Its $100 a ton to New England, which is why the price is what it is there compared to here. Prices here for pellets are not any higher than normal. Its not like we are running out of trees. Which means they are gouging in New England because of cold weather demand and hype. Pellets here are only a train ride away from New England. Which also means that you guys in NE could form a co-op and buy pellets from a smaller manufacturer here and ship them to New England.
StihlHead those pictures are outstanding. Thanks for all the info too! I want to form a co-op, who's in?
I just went through my bank account to refresh my memory. I had to divide for per bag cost as one brand is 60 bags per pallet and the other brand is 50 bags per pallet. I don't have a TSC, HD, or Lowes within a hundred miles so my choices are limited. The colorado pellets (not a fan of them) were $5.10 The south dakota pellets were $4.95 for late winter refill, and the fall buy was closer to $4.50
