We used almost all of our wood this year with this persistent cold. I Couldn't bring myself to make the call for oil, so today I split up some ash that was cut to rounds in early winter. It is in the boiler mixed with with a little seasoned wood I have left. Forgive me FHC.....
You're in gooder company. I tried burning some Maple that wasn't ripe yet, and I knew it wouldn't be. I have a thread. I think we're fine (they need the membership).
We went 3 months last spring with not quite seasoned enough wood. PIA but it kept us warm in an extra long winter.
Once the nights stay over 40 the heat pump can take over. Until then no piece of half dry wood is safe. As far as the beer goes, I'll be cold before I give up my IPA's!
At least you have back up heat! We got by on pallets at the end of last year! Thankfully, no need for green burns yet. Eric VW
Last winter I did not go that long. I cut in rounds, split it and burnt it sometimes the same day. You do what you have to do. This year I am doing gooder (sorry, I have been wanting to say that ...). Greg
I'm in really good shape for the first year ever. Like I said...the first year ever. I have about 4 cords in log form that will be split this summer, so not quite perfect, but will be 8 months seasoned at least before I touch it. If it's ash, it does throw heat regardless. Eastern white pine or oak somewhat wet is not going to do you very well.
You'll have a chance this summer to make up for it. Go for soft maple, ash, or other quicker seasoning wood and try to catch up this summer. That's my plan at least. A hot dry summer will take care of it if your wood is split and stacked by the end of May.
I burned about 3 weeks on "not quite seasoned wood". I wasn't planning on it, but I used up more than I thought and had to start using next years stack. The bottom 3/4 of that stack was ash that had been CSS for a year, but that top 1/4 was ash that I'd put on there this past fall. I kept wondering why it was sizzling when it burned until I remembered that it was a more fresh than the rest of the stack!
