You got it... now for the Paul Harvey rest of the story... Little guy was bugging his mom for breakfast, she was holding him and going through ideas for his breakfast, I was getting milk out of the fridge and he must of saw the blueberries. He started patting mom on the chest and saying "booies, booies" mom kinda had a look thinking he was talking about what he was patting. All I could do was laugh... and think "yeah that's my boy" And now you know the rest of the story.
I have a question for those of you with older children. Did you ever correct your child's grammar when they were toddlers and if so did it work? My daughter has started saying I doesn't rather than I don't. Speaking proper English is one of my pet peeves, especially where my children are concerned.
Well, I don't have older kids, just a 2 1/2 yr old.... BUT, my mom has been teaching for almost 40 years now, and has been in early childhood development for the last 30ish years, she will retire after this school year. She is always telling me to correct my little guy, and pounding it in my head to use correct English myself, and keep from using to much slang. It won't happen over night, but I would say yeah correct them, but don't force it. It does amaze me the things kids retain when you think there not paying attention to you.
I am constantly amazed by my little ones recall. Last week the family went out for dinner. I got some soup that came with oyster crackers. I offered some of the crackers to my three year old son and he said "no those make me sick." I had no idea what he was talking about but my wife said "don't you remember last summer when we went on a day trip to Ogunquit, Maine during our vacation and he got sick in the car on the way home. I said "yes and?" To which my wife replied well he had those crackers at the lobster place for lunch that day, that's what he's talking about."
I just thought about this thread the other night, then life got in the way and I forgot to post... So a few nights ago my Lovely Wife was putting Little Guy to bed, we have been having a hard time with him going to bed on time, and by himself. Got through the nightly routine of Bath, Brush teeth, read Books, and Bed time. (the 4 B's) Lovely Wife was trying to get him to lay down (was in our room watching on the monitor), and as per his normal Little Guy was thinking of everything he could not to lay down, "I need puppy and baby giraffe" (his favorite stuff animals), "I need a drink", "I need a blanket", "I need say nite nite to daddy", "you stay just cupple seconds", "I just need hugs mommy" (that one gets her) and as his always last resort "I need go potty". Now on this night he had already done both a number one and a number two before bath. So Lovely Wife looks at him and says "now you went potty twice before bath time, are you sure you need to go?" he comes right back with "yeah I gotta pee". Lovely Wife puts on her stern mommy voice and says "if your lying you will have to lay down by your self" he pops right back "Mommy I not lying, I a tall, tall giraffe!" I immediately know what he is saying and start snicker, then Lovely Wife says "your giraffe is in bed, but are you laying to mommy" and he comes back with "no tall tall giraffe!" Lovely Wife still not getting it "I don't care about the giraffe, are you lying about having to pee?" (I am rolling on the bed trying to hold in my laughter) and Little Guy says "Lying not have to pee, I have to pee" at which point I pick myself up and go in to explain to Lovely wife that He thinks she is calling him a LION, and he is calling himself a tall tall giraffe.... Lovely Wifes face went from really getting fed up with the toddler bed time run around, to total enlightenment in a split second. I took Little Guy to the bath room, where he did a very good "Austin Powers" impersonation (the long peeing scene from the Spy who shagged me) Then looked at me as says "why mommy call me a lion?" It was everything I could do not to loose it, keep composed and calm, and get him tucked in bed. He never moved after being tucked in, but took forever to fall asleep, and I am sure the reason was he was trying to figure out whay mommy called him a lion when he is clearly a tall tall giraffe!
